Don't join world gym in glendale, ca

World Gym in Glendale is large, spacious, and has differing types of equipment. Though the manager was busy on the Sunday afternoon when I dropped by, I joined the gym anyway even without taking the obligatory tour.

A sign advertised a monthly rate of $29. At the time I signed the agreement I was told I had to remain a member for 1 year and that I would be charged $29 per month plus a $125.00 enrollment fee.

The free weight and stationary machine areas are a mess. Free weights, dumbells, ropes, bars and pulleys lie either strewn about the floor or far from where they should have been returned. This is not a "once in awhile occurrence", it is usual and customary.

A few weeks my membership was scheduled to expire I called the gym and a representative told me I should call a few days before the expiration date, which in my case was 7/26/08. I called back on 7/21/08 and was told by another representative that I must speak to Mariah and was then transferred to her voice mail. I left a message explaining that I wanted to cancel my membership and left my cellular # so Mariah could return my call. She didn't.

The following day I called the gym and told a representative that I needed to speak to Mariah or anyone else who could help me in cancelling my membership. Moments later, Mariah answered the phone and said I must write a letter because members cannot cancel over the phone or be visiting the gym. She also asked that I include a check in the amount of $35 needed to process the cancellation and that I also return the photo ID issued to me by the gym shortly after I joined.

I did all this but on 7/29/08, discovered that another membership fee had been debited from my checking account. I called Mariah who said she received my request but had been unable to process it in a timely manner & as a result, my membership had been extended an additional month.

I told Mariah that I did not want my membership extended, pointing out I issued a check for $35, which paid processing needed to cancel my membership. I also reminded her that I returned my membership card.

Mariah, coldly stated there was nothing she could do but added that I could still access the gym using my driver license. I asked her if had intended on informing me of what her gym had done and she replied that I would receive a letter in "a few days." I never received the letter and World Gym deducted money from my account they were not authorized to debit.

I placed a stop payment on the $35 check but 2 months later received a bill charging me $78 for membership from 7/26/08-8/26/08 and 8/27/08-9/26/08 plus a $10 late fee and a $10 processing fee.

Mariah had ordered reinstatement of my membership, AGAIN, without my authorization.

I have now filed a complaint with the office of the State Attorney General of California.
