Mundial Cocina Mestiza Restaurant Review

Oaxaca-born Hector Marcial (a KDK restaurants vet) presides in the kitchen of this ambitious BYO in Pilsen. He has crafted visually appealing --- and frequently memorable --- plates like chicken in a Jamaican-style curry and vibrant, grilled shrimp with fresh romeritos, shallots, asparagus, roasted red peppers and bacon-Swiss chard fried rice. From Mexican-style paella, cowboy steak with...

Opened by three veterans of Chicago's fine-dining scene, this cozy restaurant is anything but white tablecloths and snooty servers. The tortillas are made fresh to order, the tamales are homemade and the banana crepes will make you want to cry. The menu is regional Latin and Mediterranean cuisine, one of the best deals in town and BYOB. Pick up a bottle of wine on the way and they'll whip up...

There's no pretense at this innovative but simple Latin eatery in Pilsen.

The Scene
Appearance-wise, little distinguishes this narrow, blue and white-tiled, two-room storefront with unclothed, faux wood tables from nearby taquerias. Decorated with roping,...

An Afternoon in Pilsen

Although the restaurant is located in the heart of Pilsen, the food was not very reminiscent of the Hispanic culture, yet it was fabulous! Our seafood was done to perfection. My friend and I made an afternoon of Pilsen. We went to the National Museum of Mexican Art, then dined afterwards at Mundial. It made for a great afternoon with an early dinner.

The food lives up to it's Michelin Bib Gourmand status. The staff was friendly. The waiter was knowledgeable and his recommendations were spot on. The food was upscale, interesting and fresh. I would definitely go again. The only thing that was a miss for me was the creme brule, which had a candied fruit topping that I did not like. The neighborhood kids across the street from the restaurant...

This bright Pilsen restaurant is the brainchild of several downtown restaurant veterans. The name means 'worldwide' and the menu reflects that sentiment. An extensive menu includes regional Mexican dishes such as seafood stew, ceviche and moles. Also offered are Mediterranean-influenced dishes such as bruschetta, homemade panini and pastas, a raw bar, and children's menu. Several vegetarian...

Mundial is not the typical Pilsen restaurant and is on the higher priced end of restaurants in the area. Described by the chef as a blend of pre-Columbian cooking with a European influence, the end result is worth the investment. For brunch, one of the recommended favorites is the Green Chilaquiles, made with crispy tortilla totopos, machaca, and a choice of eggs. Good for any season is the...

The Extras

Brunch along this strip is a rare find, but the kitchen here cranks out some mean fruit crepes and egg dishes.
