Editorial reviews from the web (2)

Don't confuse with nearby Hop Li or Hop Woo. Feckless alcoholic womb tucked in narrow Opium Den Chinatown crawl space beneath a tiny tower. Cheap drinks, "Crazy" on the jukebox, and barkeep pictures drawn by local artists as atmo placeholders. Cubists be forewarned, Grandpa Bill is sensitive about his head. Used to be occasional free drinks and full of friendly faces; now it's crowded with...

Seductive and slightly strange Chinatown bar smacks of film noir.

In Short
Lurking beneath Chinatown's signature 1941 pagoda is a dimly lit hole that's all right and all wrong at the same time. The classic, black lacquer bar is softly lit with red and...

Hop Louie is one of my favorite hideaways to grab a drink, chat, and hang out with friends.

Wonderful!

Old school, not updated, but the food was fantastic! I have NEVER had such delicious chow mein before. And I have never thought much about it...very fine noodles. The sweet sauce ont he chicken was sublime...not overly sweet. AND it was at the end of the evening too! Thanks!! Great dinner! See you again...

Been here about 30 times. Today is one of them. Great drinks and jukebox. Good Food in the upstairs restaurant.I almost always get the wonton soup and crab rangoon. Like today.

Waitress was rude. Another party asked her to take a picture for them and although she was busy which is understood she didnt have to make them feel like they were asking for the impossible and yelling she was busy.

Stumbled onto Hop Louie attracted by Chinese architecture. We decided to go in for a meal. Restaurant is upstairs, a bar downstairs. Red carpet on stairs needs replacing but fine when you get to restaurant area. Done out in typical Chinese style looks good. We ordered the "family meal special for 2"......cost $18.55 all inclusive....soup, entree, 4 mains. Meal and...

The famous, if not notorious, dive bar of Chinatown Hop Louie stands as testimony to the olden days of barflies and speakeasies while still drawing appreciative patrons to this day. With its quirky exterior and cozy interior, there is poetic shabbiness to the place that lends it a discreet charm. Cheap drinks and tasty eats agreeably round out the experience. A few come here for casual late...

The Extras

Serious boozers and after-work downtowners forgoe exotic drinks in favor of old reliables like beer and high balls.

Know Before You Go

Head upstairs for chow mein and more. Parties of ten can reserve the posh round room on the second floor of the pagoda.
