With over 30 years working in the Electronics industry, Don Phipps has had a variety of Servicing and Installation experience. Having taken a two year Electronics Servicing Technology course in 1977-79 at Mt Hood Community College in Gresham, OR. Don went straight to work in television, radio, and two-way communications at Crowley Radio & TV in Kelso,WA. His start was in TV checking tubes and CRT's from older TV sets for their operational qualities. This was important for the chief TV Technician to do Service estimates. After about a year in May 1980 when Mt St. Helens erupted, Don was asked to advance into the two-way radio shop by the owner, Hal Stange. I was needed to work installing communications for all sorts of vehicles and in all types of industries. We were the first, and only two-way radio Company to Service the Construction Companies in the Red Zone of the Blast area where Mt St. Helens came through the N. Toutle river valley. I drove up into Coldwater camp to be flown into Spirit Lake to install a base station at the pump station. I drove into blizzarding snow, nearly got stranded, got myself unstuck and drove about 25 miles out in the dark on the mainline logging road. There were many more trips including the very start of the 10' tunnel project through Coldwater ridge. We installed a relay by radio-phone via a touchtone keypad so that telephone calls could be made in and out of the remote locations. This was the beginning of my experience in Electronics.
