Young People's Ballet Theatre

Young People’s Ballet Theatre was founded in 1988 by Denise Paavola, a former professional ballerina and Flint, Michigan native. For 24 years the company has been committed to developing and maintaining a varied repertory of classical, contemporary, and character ballets, with an emphasis on creating new ballets for our dancers and audiences based on children’s fairy tales and classic stories. With lavish sets and scenery, exquisite costumes and creative story-telling, YPBT programs have delighted audiences of all ages with high quality productions.

Upon the retirement of Ms. Paavola as Artistic Director in 2012, Young People’s Ballet Theatre created a school offering a full dance curriculum with a strong foundation in classical ballet for children over the age of 3, pre-professional students pursuing a career in dance, and adults seeking fitness and fun.

Presently, under the direction of Nicholas and Laura Schultz, Young People’s Ballet Theatre produces one new major ballet each spring. We also perform various concerts and fundraisers, including “Breakfast with Santa” in December and a Spring Gala in June. Our talented young dancers and dedicated instructors assure our audiences of high quality, professional-like productions.

Excellant school with a great history

My children love going to this ballet school. I did too as a child. The atmosphere is friendly, supportive and warm. The performing company puts on amazing productions that are professional quality. I would recommend this school to everyone

Great Experience

My daughter has been taking dance classes at the studio since 2001. She joined the YPBT performance company when she was eight years old. She has learned a variety of dance styles including ballet, jazz, modern and contemporary. Since she joined the company she has worked with an array of professional teachers and choreographers. She has performed in classical ballets and has attended many Summer Intensives and workshops as well. YPBT is her second family. She is in a safe and friendly environment and has a nice group of friends. What dance has taught our daughter is confidence and grace, the love of classical music as well as other music genres. Through dance she has developed an excellent memory and easily memorizes new steps and dances, which requires discipline. Ballet has improved her flexibility, posture, muscle strength, and tone. I would wholeheartedly recommend YPBT to any family looking for an outstanding dance experience for their child.

An Amazing Place for Kids to truly learn the art of Dance and Ballet

Our family is very happy with our experiences at Young People’s Ballet Theater (YPBT). We have a daughter and a son both taking classes there.

If you are considering a dance school, it is important to know that even children dancing in YPBT's beginning levels are given top-notch instruction. Many of the teachers are current or former dancers from respected professional companies.

Children studying at Young People’s Ballet Theater have the opportunity to dance with professional guest dancers in annual full-length performances as well as in end-of-year events.

Every YPBT student is taught with care and artistry. As a result, YPBT dancers are some of the best in the area. They continue to gain recognition and many students are accepted into leading summer dance programs, university dance programs and dance companies throughout the United States and abroad.

We are proud to be associated with such a fine school. Young People’s Ballet Theater School is a wonderful, welcoming environment.

A Gem in Flint

Our girls LOVE YPBT. When we moved 2 years ago from the west side of Michigan to the east side, we knew the biggest hurtle for our two oldest girls was going to be finding a comparable ballet school. From the first day, our girls felt at home. This is more than just a high level professional dance school. YPBT is a family. A place where every dancer, no matter the level, is made to feel welcome and valued for their efforts. Each person is encouraged to do their personal best.

The biggest surprise for our girls, came in their development in the areas of jazz and contemporary dance. We knew they would receive excellent ballet training. But that excellence extends to the other forms of dance as well.

YPBT is a great place for dancers of all ages to learn the art of ballet (and other styles of dance). The teachers are great, and not to mention the dancers! They create professional quality performances, and a loving environment for the dancers to learn and grow.
