Kurt Gutenbrunner and Leo Schneemann's West Village locale, offering oysters, seasonal cuisine, and global wines, and paying homage to Austrian design.

The Upholstery Store is an intimate Austrian wine bar owned by Kurt Gutenbrunner, the chef-owner of Michelin-starred Wallse. A variety of Austrian wines by the glass and bottle are complemented by cheeses, cured meats and other gourmet snacks. Seasonal items include elegant rosés and white wines in the spring and summer, and warming glasses of glühwein and bowls of hearty goulash in the fall...

Austrian wine bar in the Financial District.

Pity the schlub seeking a chocolate brown velveteen for his sectional here. Sign's been hanging for thirty years, so it stays even as Wallsé chef Kurt Gutenbrunner seriously rearranges the furniture. Cozy nook with unusual and world-class wine list. For small plates, think pâté not tapas. Rustic and romantic -- so much the former that it's cash-only.

A tiny wine bar carved out of a former upholstery store.

Known for his tasty schnitzels and bejeweled wine lists, chef/restaurateur Kurt Gutenbrunner (of Wallsé, Blaue Gans and Cafe Sabarsky) may be a symbol of Austrian precision and modernity, but he...

Two things make a great restaurant in my opinion. The ambiance and the staff. Upholstery has the best of both.

casual and intensely satisfying

You feel good the minute you walk in to the Upholstery Store. The great chef Kurt Gutenbrenner opened this place close to Wallsé, and his influence shows not just in the very tasty, eclectic food, and the well-focused and fairly price wine list that goes beyond his Austrian borders with many interesting selections, but also with the sense of entering...

An upscale bite and a drink

This place is perfect for a mid day drink with some upscale bite next to it.
I had a fresh cocktail and a lobster roll. Just what i was looking for.
The crowd is young and the atmosphere is casual. Don't dare not to order a cocktail.

If you like small places that are a bit off the beaten track - quieter and a bit classier in a small place way - well, check out this one. We came upon it on a wander to the Whitney, which is just up the street. We live in the 'hood some of the year and had overlooked it. We...

Quiet gem of a spot for a tasty dinner

This wine bar now serves dinner also and it is an attractive space (marble cafe tables, dark wood paneling in the dining room) with its bar on one side and dining area on the other. We sampled the spiced olives (fabulous!) and the cheese board along with the fried chicken on a scrumptious potato salad and the pan seared arctic...
