Help us make it rightTraffic Jam and Snug, Established in 1965, is truly one of Detroit's hidden treasures. Known throughout midtown for our in-house bakery, microbrewery, and dairy, our curiously intimate multi-level dining rooms, and an eclectic menu of made-from-scratch dishes, there is simply nothing quite like the traffic jam.
Traffic Jam opened in 1965 at the corner of West Canfield Street and Cass Avenue and has maintained its tradition of being a...n eclectic neighborhood mainstay with a restaurant that has its own bakery, making breads and desserts, and dairy, making cheese and ice cream. Traffic Jam became Michigan’s first licensed brew pub in 1992, which accentuates its “made-from-scratch” approach. See More

Restaurants seem to be getting faceless, often using far
from local ingredients. They lack little identity or character. Traffic Jam and
Snug has the opposite mentality, going beyond just serving local ingredients by
actually crafting them in their in-house brewery, creamery and bakery.
“What other restaurant makes its own bread, ice cream” and cheese besides this 1965 Eclectic near Wayne State, which also features a microbrewery producing “interesting” beers, “inventive” savories including “vegetarian dishes that are as tasty as their meaty companions” and “succulent desserts”; service “can vary from prompt and attentive to slow and off-hand”, and the “cavernous”, “rustic”,...
When different owners took over a couple of years ago, they knew what a good thing founder Ben Edwards had created. And so they didn't tamper with success. The Wayne State University hangout (professors rather than students for the most part) has always been known for its fresh-baked breads (including an ever-changing bread du jour), house-made cheeses and eclectic menu that emphasizes...
In Short
Innovations over the years have included a bakery, a brewery and a dairy, all on the premises. The crowd is as eclectic as the menu, with before- and after-theater business a...
Uh oh. Right off the bat, this struck me as another really big place with lots of stuff to look at. They had a short vestibule with the bar to the immediate left upon entering. It was just a wee, tiny, oval bar, but the stools were 1950s Archie comics Pops Choklit Shop vintage. To the extreme left of the bar, headed aft, was a lounge with sofas and chairs as well as artwork for sale. Upstairs,...
Cute friendly place, somewhat upscale, near the university. A small and personal bar, well lit up, where coffee and desserts are welcome. Private tables to have a date or talk without lots of noise. Jazz music. Like Starbucks if they went into the beerpub business. Only three beers on tap, all decent.Extra half point for air hockey game instead of video game. Lots of interesting health breads....
GREAT ATMOSPHERE! Very ecclectic with a lot of corners and hidden "snugs." Walk in the front door and see a small bar. Walk into the front dining area and find some uncomfortably placed tables near the entrance and some nice hidden ones behind one wall. After that you hit the mostly open kitchen and prep area. THEN you find another dining area with wood pilings and kitchy detroit wall decor....
The Traffic Jam is a Detroit classic, a true mainstay. It was built eons ago and survives in an area that's quintessential Detroit -- young, fun, an artsy 2 blocks to the east; run down near-the-freeway homes to the west; a mish-mash of substandard housing, Wayne State University, and another brewpub to the north; and burnt out homes 3 blocks to the south.
The sign looks only a couple decades...
We dined here on a Saturday night, and ate outside so small kids wouldn't disrupt others. I can't say much about the interior, except that the bar and the route to the restroom were darkish and unimpressive. Overall, I wasn't impressed either.
The server seemed somewhat capable but lacked great enthusiasm. The food was OK but certainly didn't stand out. I had a white bean veggie burger on a...

Take Out, Lunch: This local favorite is famous for its onsite brewpub, bakery, and dairy. A changing menu offers both vegetarian and non-vegetarian fare, all bearing that unmistakable "made from scratch" tastiness — meatloaf and fish 'n chips are excellent choices. Dessert is not to be overlooked either, thanks to offerings like the Carlotta Chocolatta Ice Cream Cheesecake. Exceptional sundaes...
This restaurant has many events during the year. Serving food from their dairy, bakery and restaurant. Offering homemade ice cream and sorbert. Also available is a wide selection of beer from their brewery. Michigan was the first to enact the brewpub law and this restaurant became the first brewpub in Michigan.
