The University Club was founded on the premise that there should be a comfortable place to find old friends and meet new ones. Ask any member, the "U Club" is one of the best kept secrets in the Twin Cities for summer fun and special occasions.
I helped to plan an event at the University Club of Saint Paul in the downtown location, although I have been to the Summit location, as well (both are very nice). It was a bit frustrating to plan the space without actually visiting it, because the club's website is lacking. But in the grand scheme of things, the unimpressive website wasn't a big deal. Another small issue was that I had to switch sales reps, which was frustrating. In hindsight, however, this was a good thing, as our initial sales rep was not very impressive (and I heard she has since left the club), and Julia (whom we were switched to) was fantastic!
The event went off flawlessly (it was a 60th birthday party for my mom). The food was delicious, and the staff was very friendly. My mom felt very special, and had a wonderful time. The guests had a lot of fun, and raved about the food. The head server of the event (George I think his name was) was so accomodating! He and his staff were just great.
Overall, I wish I could give this venue 4.5 stars - but alas, I can't!

My sister got married here in August 2008. The following were the issues:
The food was TERRIBLE. The lettuce was so wilty it looked/tasted like it had been sitting in the sun for hours. Additionally they DRENCHED the soggy lettuce in the dressing. It was so bad most guests opted not to eat their salad at all. The night of the wedding they changed the kind of chicken that was prepared. The punch they said was enough for our 184 guests ran out after the first half hour. We were told that punch could be served in cups my mom had specially ordered for the couple; she put them on the punch table the morning of the wedding. To this day we have no clue what happened to them...they certainly did not get used! They ran out of liquor and the bartender said it was b/c no one ordered more after the club's previous event.
The University Club just contacted my sister and her husband about two weeks ago to say they owe almost $1,300 more, even though they have records stating the entire bill is paid (without any money taken off for all the screw ups). Infact, their statement shows that the Club was supposed to charge the final amount to be $800 and they charged $1,400 ($600 more than they were given permission for) and when it was addressed after my sister looked at her bank statement, they said that they found extra fees after they spoke with my sister on the phone for that final payment.
Please do NOT let anyone you know use this venue!
My Maid of Honor's mom is a member of the University Club in Saint Paul on Ramsey Hill, but she said that anyone can rent it, and we visited, we fell in love with it. The view over the Mississippi River Valley is amazing! The venue is it tip-top condition all over, and the people very friendly. The whole thing went off without a hitch, and our guests loved being able to wander through not only...
This is the first time I have been to the University club and was very impressed. Relax and enjoy the experience there.
While this is a private club, at least in my social circles I know a number of people who are members and it isn't uncommon to go there. You could actually just walk in to the bar and restaurant and eat there--they don't actually check in my experience and they take credit cards (members can use their billing accounts)--so long...
Great service. They go out of their way to offer excellent service. Nice place. Parking can be tricky. The U Club will hire valets for events.
This is a private club and the resteraunt is for members only. I ate here as a part of a wedding party. When you walk up to this mansion you are greeted with the street address of 420 Summit ave. I think this used to be someones house but has been set up really nicely. The wine and appetizers were...
