This elegant restaurant is near the real Oval Office at the White House, but its doors are always open to the hungry public. Executive chef John Melfi’s contemporary American menu is offered within a gleaming and modernized décor. A draw for politicos and power people, it is a logistically sensible place to stop for lunch and/or dinner. It is also gastronomically ideal for foodies who crave the...
Deep "in lobbyist territory" close to the White House, this "sophisticated" New American trades in "inventive" dishes served with "panache and style", at prices that may "not be for the 99%"; still, it's a "great experience" dining among "power" in the "quiet and understated" green-and-red (but not oval) room, with tables spread "far enough apart for good conversation."
Because food is politics in this town. Big shots duel amicably; have their hearty disagreements with a side of foie gras ravioli. Plush red chairs lean a little Republican, though definitely not fiscally conservative. New American menu reaches out to most of the fifty states, but just like California, Texas, and New York—fish, chicken, and steak are over-represented. Condoleezza Rice digs this...
Expect a lot of name-dropping and famous political faces in this white-tablecloth power den close to the White House. It seems that everyone here has an agenda, but for chef Tony Conte—an alum of Jean-Georges Vongerichten's kitchen—it's turning unexpected food combinations into a remarkably good modern American cuisine. Conte chars cubes of pumpkin and chestnut and tosses them with ricotta...
The Oval Room is a local favorite, another winner for owner Ashok Bajaj, who also owns the Bombay Club right across the street, Rasika in the Penn Quarter, and newest sensation, Bibiana , on the northern edge of the Penn Quarter. Current chef Tony Conti offers reasonably priced modern American cuisine, including caramelized beef tenderloin, crispy striped bass, and the like. The Oval Room...
Food was exceptional, wine and cocktails great and the service was even better. It's on the pricier side but absolutely worth it. Will definitely come back. It's a great place for a special celebration or for nice business dinners.
The restaurant was not too busy for a Saturday evening and the ambience was pleasant. It was Resutaurant Week and tehre was quite a selection of dishes to choose from. I ordered the Cured Pork Lomo for a starter, dorado for the main and Banana Foster's custard for dessert. I had a glass of Vouvray with my starter and main and it accompanied the delicious tastes of both courses very well. My...
Went during Restaurant Week. The pork appetizer was underwhelming. The carrot salad was very good. The food portions were on the small side. Our server was impeccable. The valet charged me $10.00 to park when his sign said it was $8.00. The Oval Room should get this overcharging customers for valet parking remedied. Irritating way to end the night.
We went for restaurant week and even though it was discounted pro in for the promotion, the options and serving sizes were all excellent. The heirloom carrot s d coriander salad was excellent, as were the entrees of Salmon, NY strip and duck. Desserts were on the simpler side but all were very tasty too.
We visited The Opal Room during 2017 Winter Restaurant Week. We met friends there and had a great dining experience. Food was outstanding, particularly the duck and coconut grits. Service was attentive, helpful and unobtrusive; we lingered and never felt rushed. Definitely recommend The Opal Room to others and we look forward to our next visit.
