The National Postal Museum, a Smithsonian Institution museum, is located in the old Post Office building next to Union Station in Washington, D.C. The Museum was created by an agreement between the Smithsonian Institution and the United States Postal Service in 1990 and opened to the public in 1993.

By the time you read this, in 2012, the Postal Museum should have expanded to add a 12,000-square-foot gallery at street level (the main section is one level down), with room for a welcome center and more exhibit and public program areas. But whether or not the new William H. Gross Stamp Gallery has debuted in time for your visit, you'll still want to stop by.

I expected to be there for *maybe* 20 minutes, and ended up spending hours immersed in some of the best, easy to understand, yet informative and, dare I say it - *fun* exhibits, some of which are hands on. Featuring an exciting collection of airmail planes, mail trucks, stagecoaches, rare stamps, letters, a Pony Express exhibit and so much more, the National Postasl Museum is an ideal place to visit when in Washington DC. This museum is part of the Smithsonian Institution and is open daily from 10am to 5:30pm, except Christmas Day. Admission is free and group tours are available by appointment.
