In the citizen-owned era, The Heritage Society founded the 1886 Lunchroom, successfully operated and staffed for over 20 years by members. Stocked with recipes from the hotel's past (including a stint by Neiman Marcus culinary director and "duchess of Texas cuisine" Helen Corbitt), and their own family histories, the ladies of the Heritage Society operated a venue that to this day is known as...

Gilded Age Splendor - And Lighting

The Driskill Hotel is down the road from the Texas State House (supposedly because it housed a 19th. century Gentleman's Club patronized by cattle barons). The building was saved from destruction and lovingly restored to its Victorian splendor, which unfortunately, despite the modern lighting still is a little dim, almost by gaslight. It is a truly remarkable building just to wander around with a lot of atmosphere and romance. The bar upstairs and the 1806 cafe are both lovely to look at and spend some time in. The hotel is conveniently located if you are exploring Austin by foot or car. It's a short walk to all of the live music, clubs and restaurants you could possibly want to see. I would definitely stay there again if I return to Austin.

The combination of romantic lighting, formal table settings, fresh flowers and professional service makes us feel like we've stepped back in time at this elegant restaurant. While the menu changes almost nightly, dishes have included pork belly with mezcal glaze, a 12-ounce Prime rib-eye, and salmon with spaghetti squash and serrano beurre blanc. (Cody Leonard is the current chef.) And there's...

Service or Repair Issues

I took my daughter and grandsons there on April 7th to experience the hotel and see the solar eclipse. We checked in around 5:50 pm as a walk in and was gone before 6:30 pm. First experience was with the valet staff. They opened my door and was standing there making me feel rushed while trying to gather everything. I even apologized even though I wasn't taking that long but he was literally...
