The Benson, A Coast Hotel Review

Portland was built by outrageous and generous timber barons, and Simon Benson was one of the best. He was the guy responsible for installing all the beautiful bronze drinking fountains that are still standing on downtown streets; the idea was to save thirsty loggers from having to enter the immoral environment of the local saloons. Another one of his venerable contributions is the classic...

Historic, opulent hotel in downtown hosts visiting rock stars and politicos.

The Scene
Lumber tycoon Simon Benson built the hotel in 1912, using only the best materials for the lobby: Austrian-crystal chandeliers, Circassian walnut walls and Italian marble floors....

Well the Benson more than beat our expectations. It was a real special experience for us for Christmas dinner. We actually got the private table in the wine room. What a treat! Wait staff could have been better and the voices off the pre-fixed menu were yummy. We had all the choices covered between us all and everything was spectacular.

I stayed here to bring my son to admitted student day at Reed. This is our second stay and probably last. The lobby of the hotel is truly beautiful, but the rooms are all in need of a redo. The hotel is very noisy, you hear both street noise and hallway noise. Bathrooms are exceptionally tiny. Room service is quite...

From the moment we arrived at the Benson the staff was helpful and accommodating. They had our suitcases inside before my husband had even paid for our taxi. From giving us suggestions on transportation to dining, they were always friendly and with great information.
They are currently doing renovations, but knowing that we were going to be there for a...

Great hotel stay

My wife and I stay at the Benson for our 16 anniversary....although, the main reason we pick this particular hotel was the proximity to El Gaucho where we had dinner reservations(fantastic BTW)
That being said; we were pleasantly surprised on how elegant, clean and nice the entire hotel was.

The Magic of The Benson

The Benson is rich in history and in charm. You won't find a more competent or friendly staff anywhere. The rooms are comfortable and well appointed. The hotel food is waaaaay beyond hotel food--it's excellent. I'd go back in a heartbeat. The Benson made my stay in Portland a perfect trip.
