Extraordinary sushi every day

Our restaurants serve only traditional sushi of the highest quality based on Chef Nozawa’s style of sushi. Our passion is to carry forward his great tradition and style of food – which many believe is the best sushi there is.

Good quality fish, but very limited menu.

Sugarfish is basically Sushi Nozawa in Studio City but with a much nicer dining room and a more touristy location by 3rd Street Promenade. Overall Sushi Nozawa has made its name with a very picky chef who likes to serve is sushi in a very specific way. That specific way seem to involve good quality fish, very loosely packed rice (good luck picking it up in one piece), and "special sauce" that he adds to every piece so you're not supposed to ruin it by dipping it in soy. His sauce of choice seems to be ponzu sauce, or some very close variant of it, and sometimes it's a citrus/lemony sauce.

The result is quite tasty, and I think the quality of the seafood is excellent. The presentation and service at Sugarfish is quite nice, and compared to most restaurants in the 3rd Street Promenade area, it's a good value.

However, unless you like his very specific way of presenting fish and sushi, you don't have many good options. His "Trust Me" menu, which costs $30 is a good value, but you may feel that many of the items end up tasting the same, which is great if you love his style and not so good if you don't.

His style basically does not involve any of the "heavy" korean-american influenced sushi dishes which have things like bbq sauce or deep-fried tempura bits on them, nor any sort of mayo or richer sauces. One can have endless arguments about whether those are "real" or "authentic" sushi - I know I enjoy them all, and even though I like Nozawa' style I do enjoy eating at Kabuki and Octopus sushi too.

I thought I knew what good sushi was, until I came to this place. I was so blown away by the taste of the rice, the choice of fish, and the presentation. It's fairly on the expensive side, and the...

WOW!!! So THIS is how sushi is supposed to taste!??!? I guess it really does pay off when you eat raw fish within walking distance of the ocean from where it came. My coworker and I both went...
