Help us make it rightOriginally home to the Ursuline Academy School for Girls in the 19th century, this historic property was purchased in 1965 by the San Antonio Conservation Society. The Society feared demolition and decided to save the 10 acres. With reflections of French design, the conglomeration of small buildings is beautiful, especially the small chapel adorned with amazing stained glass. Today the center...

History: The Ursuline Convent & Academy was established in 1851, when seven Catholic nuns arrived in San Antonio to start South Texas first school for girls. For more than 100 years, girls of all nationalities, taking classes taught in English, Spanish, French and German, studied and lived on this site. When the Ursuline Academy closed, the buildings and grounds fell into disrepair but were...

The Scene
Interestingly enough, the gift shop at the Southwest School of Arts and Crafts is filled not with student work but instead with work from teachers and local, regional and...
This is such a peaceful and beautiful place to get artsy! This used to be an old nuns' convent back in the day. They have restored it over the years to its former glory, and took out most of the...
This was a quick stop in, so let me begin by saying the restaurant smelled amazing, but didn't get to eat there. This school is in an old convent which has been repurposed. Yeah for saving old buildings. We toured the grounds in addition to visiting the galleries. Most work of the young artists is available for sale. And it...
Very diverse selection of adult classes, with really knowledgeable instructors and great facilities. The ceramics clay department is wonderful with great clay and glaze labs.
My wife and I were given a tour of the facilities by my cousin's husband (Steve)who works here. One could spend hours here heading into various galleries. If you want to see looms, this is the place to visit. The restaurant meal was also excellent. It certainly made our day complete. As a photographer teacher, if I lived in San...
This school was founded in the 1800s by Catholic nuns. A video, which is shown in the welcome center room of the museum, is well done and very informative. The grounds are quiet and charming. There is also a very nice little restaurant. I enjoyed the walk from the RiverWalk to the museum. It was about a half hour leisurely...
The Southwest School includes an exhibition gallery, artist studios and classrooms. Learn about both the school and the historic site at the Visitors Center Museum in the First Academy Building. The Ursuline Sales Gallery carries unique crafts items, most made by the school's artists.

The creations sold in the gift shop are not for those who think art only belongs on the wall. These pieces are functional and decorative, contemporary and ready for use. Wear a marbleized silk tie, read by a lamp with a photo on its shade, cook with pewter utensils--it's your chance to interact with art each and every day.
Established by nuns of the Ursuline Order, the buildings are a fine example of rare French architecture, and the grounds are a beautiful place to spend a breezy afternoon watching artists create and sell their wares. Two galleries also feature the work of visiting artists, instructors and students. Some of the instructors wares are on sale in the Gift Shop.
