German food and beverages with a modern twist.
The food at Schmidt's is authentic yet refined: proof that German restaurants don’t just deal in gut-busting sausages, schnitzels and gargantuan boots of lager. Schmidt's does serve sausages and schnitzel---spätzle, too---in its minimalist digs with elegant white walls, but dishes are delivered with fresh touches. The potato salad is lightly dressed, and in early spring, dishes bow to the...
From the good peoples behind Teutonic Mission stalwart Walzwerk, uber-clean, spare and smart corner deli serves a small but very good lunch menu to freelancers and neighborhood types. Veal schnitzel with white egg sandwich is tender and gratifying, as is the herbed cheese spatzle. Fantastic, kooky collection of German deli goods for sale: mustards, pickles, pickled sausages, brotkorb (breads),...
This sleek and spacious box of an eatery may seem uncluttered and unassuming, but anyone familiar with authentic German deli nosh will go spatzle over its offerings. On Christiana Schmidt’s lunch...
fancier version of Walwerk
As a recent convert to the deliciousness of German food, I've been trying to check off every German/Austrian restaurant in the city: Leopold's, Walzwerk, Suppenküche, and finally this weekend,...
Schmidt's rocks it! They have fantastic german beers on tap that you will struggle to find anywhere else, even the glassware is accurate. The food is hearty and you will swear you are lost in...
I was fortunate to have found Schmidt's on a recent visit to San Francisco - what a terrific discovery ! A modern, upbeat take on German food. Also a great selection of tasty, high end beers - particularly like their collection of doppel bocks. Hope they open an outlet in Sydney soon !
That's all I can say...and for my American/English readers: that means is just "so,so". The food was okay, but it took way too long to arrive (especially since the restaurant was almost empty). And also, come on guys, can't you tell that when most of your patrons put on their down jackets (that they actually took off 10 minutes ago),...
Visit the retail wall for hard-to-find German dry goods mustards, plum mousse, curry ketchup, Bionade sodas and goosberries.
Look for the short list of imported German beer and wines, along with imported sodas, malt beer and apfelschorle (German apple juice with Pellegrino).
