Ponder early-California life in one of the oldest buildings south of Monterey.

The Background Founded in 1771, San Gabriel is one of 21 famous missions Father Serra set up in California. The building originally housed sleeping quarters and workshops for the mission fathers. In its restored form, it now displays native artifacts of the Shoshone people, otherwise known as the "Gabrielenos." Some parts of the cemetery, kitchen, winery and water cisterns date back to the original complex. FactsPriceless books dating back to 1489 are on display in the mission museum, and the church's altarpiece and bell tower are still in original condition.

The tour led by curator/manager Helen Nelson is highly recommended. She was fully involved in the impeccable renovation of the mission, and she can help a layperson tell the difference between the original building and its renovated portions.
