What the community has to say about Rootstock

Information about this business (1)

If you are looking for a quiet place to grab a bite and enjoy a variety of wines and beers, Rootstock Wine & Beer is the place for you. The menu is small but solid and the beers and wines keep flowing. The service is polite, prompt and knowledgeable about wines and the ambiance is laid back and cozy, with dimly lit tables and mismatched furniture and plates. Try a delicious burger, a succulent...

Admirers insist you'll "fall in love" with this approachable Humboldt Park boîte for its charcuterie, "beautiful" cheese plates and other "light, tasty" New American bites complemented by "diverse" wines by the glass and an "excellent" beer selection; it also promises a "casual" yet "cool living-room" vibe, so though a few voice concerns about the "sketchy" neighborhood, most agree "you won't...

Rootstock Wine & Beer Bar Restaurant Review

With its ragtag mix of vintage furniture and local art, Rootstock nailed the cozy, lived-in vibe from day one. There’s an emphasis on wines and beers from small producers, which means you’ll likely find brews from Three Floyds and Flossmoor Station and more unusual wines such as a Txakolina from Spain. For the menu, a combination of small and large plates, chef Duncan Biddulph (ex-Lula Café)...

Smack in the middle of a neighborhood where culinary hopes are commonly raised and crushed with each new rumor, Rootstock appears to have made many think Humboldt Park could be on the rise again. Laid back, upscale wine bar hands out car manual-sized wine lists, stellar bottled beer list, and food menu organized by Hot Chocolate's Mark Steuer: Belgian mussels, bar plates of citrus olives, beer...

Laid-back Humboldt Park wine and beer bar with gourmet food.

Burgeoning Humboldt Park needed a chic, unpretentious gathering spot, and one visit to this relaxed spot confirms that the young, tattooed neighbors have embraced it with a passion they've reserved...

This is a must try when near the Humboldt Park area. The food was fantastic. It paired nicely with the large selection of wine and beer.

Absolutely Incredible Burger

The burger at Rootstock is sensational. It's a must. They clearly use high quality beef and they cooked it just the way I like it. They also toast the bun just a bit so that it compliments the burger perfectly. The fries are very good...

We met our son who lives in Chicago for lunch. The service was excellent and our food was delicious. The hamburger was fresh with a great croissant tasting bun. Fries were very good. The spinach & mushroom omelet made the old fashioned way! Our wine...

Business description (2)

Rootstock Wine & Beer Bar is a labor of love from 3 former Webster Wine Bar employees who decided to open a small space in Humboldt Park. Our focus is on wine and beer of small production with an emphasis on sustainable farming practices. Chef Duncan Biddulph supports local farmers, hormone free meats and seasonal produce as often as possible.

Pretty good. Nice wine selection. Mussels and flatbreat were good.

Tips about this business (3)

On the Menu

Liver lovers shouldn't skip the silky, flavor-packing chicken liver pate topped with pink peppercorns and served with crusty French bread and accoutrements such as house-made fruit preserves.

Where to Sit

The seasonal outdoor sidewalk seating is enticing, but far more sedate than inside. To really get a feel for this place, opt to sit indoors at one of the communal tables or at the wrap-around bar, where the warm, low lighting combined with that third glass of wine gives everyone a happy glow.

When to Go

What are you in the mood for? On weekends, the scene is at its liveliest--and loudest--but even in the thick of a rush, the staff is warm and welcoming. On weeknights, it's the perfect laid-back date spot.
