At RIVERA restaurant in Los Angeles, Chef John Rivera Sedlar who literally wrote the book on Modern Southwest Cuisine, celebrates Latin food in all its varieties by showcasing his talents in a new modern Latin restaurant with some of the most distinctive food and crazy cocktails in L.A. Located one block east of the Staples Center and Nokia Theatre, this L.A. Latin restaurant is perfect for...
Broken Spanish in downtown Los Angeles is a sister restaurant to the more casual B.S. Taqueria. Chef Ray Garcia teamed up with Sprout LA restaurant group on both concepts, and each has its own distinctive menu of progressive Mexican fare. The space feels open and airy, with window panels doubling as fold-down tables for sidewalk seating. Inside, guests can perch at the marble counter and watch...
Bizarre? Yes. Trendy? Definitely. A good idea at Rivera? Perhaps. John Sedlar is never one to shy away from trying out a good idea, and after a trip to State Bird Provisions in San Francisco, the Rivera chef decided on this format for dinner service.
In 1984, John Rivera Sedlar opened his first restaurant, St. Estephe, in Manhattan Beach. Here is what we wrote about it at the time: "One must be a formidable artist to create an equal marriage without allowing one to erase each other."… Read More
Jeremy Lake launched his bartending career with gusto at Rivera, where he trained under Julian Cox at the then-revolutionary seasonal, creative cocktail station. Since then, he's put together a strong program at Crossroads, which opened in the former Philippe space on Melrose. While cocktails have flown under the radar, Lake's foundation at Rivera, bolstered with a heightened sense of...
Mother's Day is universally known as one of the busiest days in the restaurant industry, thanks to brisk brunch business and a hectic dinner schedule. In years past, restaurants tended to bank on prix fixe menus, but this year more places are offering their standard a la carte menus to go along with some Mother's Day specials, making it easier for most tables to get a bigger selection. In...
Poor service!
Broken Spanish was a great choice for Valentine's Day. The menu for the night was a prix fix but all of it was just fantastic. Service would have been a pit more personal however I more than recommend anyone to take someone special there. They'll love it.
Great food! We had been concerned because we heard the food could be a bit strange here, but it was fabulous. Best tamale I have ever had. The carne asada had the most tender and well-seasoned steak ever. The large shrimp was also very well seasoned. For a lot of restaurants, the entree can be great but then they fall down on the desserts, but the dessert was fabulous: lemon curb with berries,...
Chain restaurant style so called too emphatic then awol service ..... hideously over priced .... above average menu, but who really cares the prices are sickening, total lack of value or customer care
We were disappointed in the restaurant. Both of us are foodies, so we do not mind paying for a good meal. Howevwr, the pricepoint for this place is too.excessive for what you get. Also we had a reservation but were seated at the high top tables which were not only uncomfortable but also so close to other couples there really isn't any privacy. Some of thr dishes we had were good, but the...

Restaurants near Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum: Grab the crowd that went to the Memorial Coliseum and head for Rivera, where Chef John Sedlar has the perfect set up for a hungry crowd. He offers up Latin world cuisine (think Mexico, South and Central America, Spain) via loncheras, a procession of rolling carts and hand-carried trays (think of a dim sum with a Latino bent). You'll have to try...
Although the food we eat today in Los Angeles is influenced by cultures from around the world as well as by modern fusion, the true original cuisine of our city remains essentially Latin. Every bite we eat resonates with Latin cuisine's rich, three-thousand-year history spanning three continents. The individual dinner menus in the three dining rooms at Rivera's Sangre (Spain and Portugal),...
Best New LA Restaurant 2009 John Mariani -Esquire “I ate at Rivera more times than I really needed to. I couldn’t help myself.” S.Irene Virbila -Los Angeles Times “Sedlar has been exploring the culinary relationship between Spain and the Americas for his entire professional life.” Patric Kuh -Los Angeles Magazine “The tequilas, infused with vanilla, passion fruit, or rose blossom, are...
