How is it possible this store is in business?

Radio Shack. Words from the heady 1950's denoting that technological wonder room at the house where VHF tinkerers tinkered, built their home brewed ham rigs, and dabbled in all types of electronic mayhem. Drag it into the 2010's, and what do you have? A completely unfocused, misguided, and pathetic retail store where technology is ill served, and the rest of the detritus inside is second rate trash. But, I digress from my appointed rounds today - today, I decry the idea that store hours mean nothing, and that making sales is secondary to people simply hanging around in an empty and useless box.

When I needed some butt connectors for 18ga wire today, I saw my local Radio Shack, full of the regular unwanted electronic stuff in expensive little packages. But, I needed something today, not tomorrow. It was just before 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 1, 2013. As I approached the door, two employees stood inside, chatting amicably. So, as I reach for the door, the chubby black guy waves me off, mouthing the magic words - "we're closed".

Really? Closed? Why? Hours on Tuesdays are to be until 9:00 p.m., according to the door. Even if they were to be only 6:00 due to the holiday, it was not yet 6:00. I can tell you what it was - nobody wants to make sales unless they absolutely, positively are forced to do so. I needed, oh, $6.00 of the c@!p inside - not much in the grand scheme of things - but needed today for me to be able to finish my project and move on with my life. Now, at the earliest, it will be tomorrow, and Tanners.

No wonder Radio Shack stock's price has dwindled to a mere tiny fraction of its original glory. Who wants to own the shares of a company that can't train its employees to keep the store open, or to make every possible sale on every possible day? When you find yourself in a ditch, you stop digging. Yet, Radio Shack does what it can to drive off the few remaining technological dinosaurs, like me, to whom its electronic wares might be found of interest.

Radio Shack - meh. Good luck on another year, let alone ten.
