Very good food, decent pries; service can be slow, especially if they're busy. Parking can be an issue; however, there is a lot across the street if needed. Atmosphere can be loud, but it's bearable. Again, really good food.
Ponchatoulas is great for those stuck in North Louisiana that miss South Louisiana Food. The owners are wonderful people that do a lot for the community. The owners also own Log Cabin. The market at the Log Cabin is wonderful. We often buy the frozen food to cook at home. I really like the Gumbo. It is not my grandmother's...
I had the crawfish étouffée and shrimp. Étouffée sauce was creamy and delicious and shrimp deep fried to perfection, nice light batter. I was looking for a taste of the bayou as it was my first visit to Louisiana and I found it. Interesting pub atmosphere in the older part of town.
We went to Ponchatoulas for a late lunch on Saturday in March. My wife had a combination plate with fried catfish and étouffée, and I had the peace maker poboy with fried oysters and shrimp. My oldest son had the kids fried crawfish tails and fries while my youngest chose mini-corndogs and fries. Overall, it was just okay. My wife...
We were dropping our son back off at LA Tech after a long pre-mardi Gras / Valentine weekend and needed some lunch before heeading back to Mandeville,LA.
We decided to try Ponchatoulas since we had heard it was good. It was good for lunch - with a creole flavor for Mardi-Gras day.
For 4 of us we tried the Catfish...
Ponchatoulas was founded in February 1996, by original owner Johnny Gaudet, who then partnered with Chris Garriga in 2004. With a passion for good food and fun, Gaudet opened the restaurant on the bustling Park Avenue in downtown Ruston. The building housed a fire station in the early 1900's, complete with the big red fire truck and even horse-drawn carriages lining the downtown streets. Some years later, the location became a landmark for one of history's music legends, Elvis Presley. Presley recorded in an upstairs studio of the then KRUS radio station. It wasn't until the late 1980's that the building was converted to a restaurant, not much different from the current site. The full-service restaurant offers patrons a wide variety menu that includes appetizers of seafood gumbo, fried mushrooms and boudin balls, as well as from the fryer servings of fried crawfish tails, shrimp, oyster and catfish. Ponchatoulas is famous for their crawfish étouffée, red beans and rice, crab cakes, poboys, and white chocolate bread pudding. Open for lunch and dinner, patrons often come for the free live entertainment and happy hour drink specials. The restaurant's Cajun ambiance will make you feel as though you are sitting in the French Quarter of New Orleans. If you'd rather take that New Orleans feeling home to your dining table, Ponchatoulas makes it easy with heat and serve to go orders.
