Editorial reviews from the web (3)

"Interesting and tasty" midpriced New American small plates plus "innovative" cocktails and craft beer draw the "hipster" 14th Street NW crowd to this "urban destination" with a "fab interior" sporting diner-esque red booths on the lower level, a "graffiti-glam" lounge upstairs and several outdoor spaces; a few report being "underwhelmed" by the service, but most find the staff "friendly" and...

Step one in Washington's twelve-step program towards embracing Obama cool. Glossy, blood red, geometric leather cushions, square red lanterns, sex shop chic ("Waiter, there's a vampire in my soup"). Local hot stuff chef Brian Murphy preaches truth, love, liberty on a plate—posh global flavor mash-ups: pick an exotic and/or expensive meat plus one rare sauce from a developed Asian country. Add a...

Came for dinner with two friends for Restaurant Week. I appreciated the diverse selection of dishes available for the four-course tasting menu. While the service was above average and the food quite tasty, the half-wall between the bar and dining area did little to shield us from the very lively bar! It was difficult to carry on a conversation and the tables were packed closely together, making...

Great food, great atmosphere. Service was a touch slow (restaurant week so I am giving them the benefit of the doubt) but our waitress was great and wonderful about it. Restaurant is a touch loud (sometimes it was hard to hear) but that is nothing uncommon with places like these (also, restaurant week probably played a role). Definitely coming back though!

We tried Policy for the first and enjoyed the ambiance and unique and flavorful food selection. Food portions are small (tapas) and priced accordingly. Be ready to share as the food comes out in a somewhat random order.

This experience was really lackluster. We tried to order off the special Wednesday night make-your-own arepa menu, but the waitress had no idea what we were talking about and didn't ask to find out (this is a special that's listed on their website as of recently, and currently is there). What we ordered was fine - my boyfriend's arepa was like if you put popcorn chicken in a really thin crust...

I've heard about this place a few times from some friends that are DC locals. I decided to give it a try for a friends welcome home/birthday party the other night. The prices were great, the food was delicious, and even though they did not have the wine I wanted in particular, the bartender went above and beyond to create a mixture of two wines for me to mimic that flavor. Overall we had a...

“Start early, finish late …” Welcome to Policy Restaurant and Lounge

With a focus on colorful, creative dishes and cocktails, Policy‘s menu is designed using seasonal and local ingredients. Helmed by Executive Chef Lonnie Zoeller, the restaurant highlights dishes with international influences and strong Latin-American flavors.

Shared plates include Pork Belly Chicharron with lime, agave, and...

Policy is taking center stage in D.C.’s hottest and vibrant U Street neighborhood; emerging as one of the most highly anticipated restaurants to hit the area. The “upscale diner motif” like downstairs, Love Dining Room and the airy second floor, the Liberty Lounge, this space offers the sentiment of being free and savvy. Decorated with brilliant chandeliers and art work by Andrew Funk and Drew...

Start early and finish late with Policy, where everything is guided by truth, love and liberty – from plate to glass, from table to bar. #PolicyDC

When this U Street restaurant-lounge opened and proclaimed a friendly open policy, people assumed it was the same grand opening grandstanding by the owners. However, the aptly named Policy lives up to it's promise; walk in early enough and you and your friends can grab a chair or couch and enjoy the rest of your night in comfort. That's right. No paying for $400 bottles of champagne just to sit...

Tips about this business (4)

This hip restaurant and bar is one of the U Street Corridor's standout night spots. Chef Brian Murphy specializes in nouveau-American small plates--like roasted lamb chops and tuna tartare--accompanied by a craft cocktail menu in keeping with the establishment's theme of truth, love and liberty with drinks like the First Lady, Cosmo-Policy and metro-themed Orange Line. Eat dinner downstairs in one of the red patent booths under the ornate, shining black ceiling, or head upstairs for the bar and dance floor; with its colorfully graffitied walls and elaborate collection of chandeliers, it's...

When to Go

Happy hour is Tuesday through Friday from 5pm to 8pm.

Where to Sit

Anywhere--the democratic policy means bottle service is not required to kick back in one of the bar's booths or couches.

What to Drink

Ask for something with guava rum--it's a rare find, but they keep it in stock.
