Editorial reviews from the web (4)

A bastion of "old NY coolness", this circa-1884 Midtown saloon is renowned for its "super-duper" burgers, "historic ambiance" and "fun bar scene"; while the newer spin-offs "don't have the charm" of the original, the Lincoln Center outpost offers pre-theater convenience, while the FiDi branch boasts "lovely water views."

This is where it all began in 1884, when Mr. Patrick Joseph Clarke opened the doors of the little brick saloon that would, over the next century, grow to become the legend that it is today.

Over the decades, the neighborhood around P.J.’s has experienced momentous upheaval, from the dismantling of the Third Ave El to the skyscraper boom of the 1950s. But through it all, the bar has remained...

P.J. Clarke's Restaurant Review

A key drinking spot on St. Patrick’s Day, P.J. Clarke's may now have a raw bar, an upstairs dining room called the Sidecar boasting a 280-bottle wine list and swank dishes like grilled lobster, but unless you're a regular, you'd be hard-pressed to notice. A year-long gutting and refurbishment was done just right, preserving the venue’s 1890 patina. Other things haven't changed: the...

Went here based on recommendations being one of the better burgers in the city. Didn't disappoint. Was really good. Great taste, little small for the price however. It's a business joint, so be prepared to be uncomfortable if your not in suit n tie... Otherwise pretty good. Waitress(s) need to lighten up a little bit when tourists come in...

P.J. Clarke's is an institution. If you love NY history of NY or the history of bars and taverns, then you really have to try and are likely to love it solely for its 150+ year history. And I did. But I was also pleased to find that the place doesn't rest on its reputation alone. Quite the contrary. It...

Visited this place at the turn of Oct/Nov '15 with my partner and had heard about the place from a bar in Liverpool that had been opened in tribute. Ended up going in on 3 occasions during our 6 day vacation and was remembered by the staff and treated well on my birthday whilst I was there.
I agree with...

This is where it all began in 1884, when Mr. Patrick Joseph Clarke opened the doors of the little brick saloon that would, over the next century, grow to become the legend that it is today.

For 125 years this venerable New York institution with its colorful history has entertained the famous, the infamous and everyone else who appreciate the ambiance and food of a real saloon. The pay phone is still "Out of Order", the broken cigarette machine remains broken, and the ashes of one of our favorite patrons, still reside behind the bar. Our little terrier faithfully watches "the...
