I have bought szaloncukor from Otto's in the past. This year was no different; however, what was different was that the candy had maggots in them. Buyer beware. I will never buy from Otto's again or eat szaloncukor. Disgusting.

Do you recommend this place? Absolutely not, for one reason everything is a complete mess.

Tips about this business (7) view all

Otto, this deli's jovial owner, can frequently be coaxed into playing his accordian, so don't be shy--ask him. It's part of the fun of visiting this Hungarian emporium on a Burbank sidestreet. The charming family-run shop has catered to Hungarian Hollywood and hungry Burbank since 1969. The draw has always been the sausage selection, but first-timers be warned: You might walk out with any variety of Hungarian cookbooks, music CDs, videos from Budapest, or even a spaetzle maker. The fresh Hungarian sausages include Gyulai, Debreceni, Csabai, Majas Hurka (liver) and Veres Hurka (blood). But...

The Extras: Specialized Hungarian cookware sold here includes wooden squash graters, spaetzle makers, poppy seed grinders, nut grinders, and meat grinders. You can even locate Hungarian family genealogy or pick up Hungarian software here.

What to Drink: The deli has a fine selection of famous Hungarian wines, including Egri Bikaver Bull's Blood, Balatoni, Tokaji and Gundel, as well as Hungarian beer.

Where to Sit: Two cafe tables and chairs, perched in the shade outside the store, are a pleasant place to nosh on the fresh deli sandwiches--the most popular is the giant, meaty "Otto's Special."
