This was our first time at Nell's and we were a little underwhelmed. The pictures online make the place look big and modern, however, it's actually a very small place and the decor looks like it hasn't been updated since the 70s. It had the feel of a steak house rather than a French/European restaurant. The food was okay, but not amazing. We shared the Tasting Menu to get a bit of everything....
Four foodies of a certain age had dinner at Nell's recently, some of us after an absence of 30 years (before Saleh died). Tasting menu (salmon/mussels, venison loin, huckleberry bread pudding) was excellent in all respects and reasonably priced; Saleh's calamari perfect; calf liver excellent; sole over lentils very good; Kobe hanger steak, while very good taste wise, was unfortunately served...
We always enjoy a special dinner at Nell's. The food on the menu is familiar to most people, but the recipes are unusually tasty. Everything is very well prepared. The service is always friendly and top-notch. The room is very quiet, even with groups dining nearby. The prices are above average, but they reflect the value of the cooking and the ambiance.
We have been going to Nell's over the past 8 years, and have never been disappointed. The menu is always interesting, the food consistently delicious , and the staff friendly, and quietly efficient . Our drinks arrived on time, and we were never rushed. An absolute return-to restaurant.
Happened to be in the Green Lake area and found this neighborhood gem. Great food. Service was a little slow at times even though the place was slowing down.
