I recently rented a car in KC. The car was fine. Rates are competitive but I am somewhat frustrated by inexperienced counter help. I'm an Emerald club member and as such all my information should be in there system. The person behind the counter continued to ask me questions for the information they already have. I produced my card with account number and was assured the rental was placed through the account. It wasn't, no points for the rental. It's frustrating to say the least.

Car was almost perfect. Service was perfect. The only issue I had is that the car smelled like someone had smoked cigarettes in it recently. National empowered their return lot employee who took $25 off my bill. He didn't need to speak with a supervisor or anyone else. He just did it. That is great employee management and customer service.

Checked out vehicle and saw 2.69 per gallon posted if I did not fill up tank upon return. Fuel option was at 1.89. I brought vehicle back with 3/8/tank left from an 18 gallon tank and was charged full 18 gallons at 3.00 per. Not right. I will watch that closer.

National Car Rental at Kansas City Airport (MCI) is spot on. Picking up the car is so simple - book in advance and then walk out onto the lot and pick your car! Return was painless as well. I was concerned this last trip that I had to return the car at 4:30 AM and no one would be there - turns out they had staff on hand even that early. Took no time at all to return the car and get on my way. Staff is friendly - but overall, ease of booking and picking up the car is the reason I use National when I'm in KC. I'm usually pleased with the service, choices and pricing. Unfortunately my most recent experience provided very limited choice of vehicle and ultimately I was given a 4 cylinder compact Jeep. Clearly my most disappointing interaction with national ever. However, I won't let (1) bad experience ruin my overall loyalty.
