Editorial reviews from the web (2)

This lodge in the shady depths of Madera Canyon is used primarily by bird-watchers and hikers, and although the rooms are not as nice as those at the Chuparosa Inn, the birding is as good as it gets. The rooms and cabins are large, comfortable, and simply furnished, and all have kitchenettes in which you can do a bit of light cooking. So, because the nearest restaurants are 13 miles away, I...

We went in on December nights (first Friday/Sat in December) where all the museums open for free. The first hall we were in had photos from all over the world taken at the dawn of photography. We saw photos of the Colisseum, Pantheon, Parthenon, Roman forum, amongst many others. It was cool to see places we had been to taken...

A small museum at Balboa Park. It is good to spend some time there checking the photos. I really enjoyed the teenager's exhibit, to see how anyone can capture so many emotions through the lens.
They have a small shop with some books, cameras and postcards. I bought a teleidoscope, which can be a nice gadget to take funny nice...

We live in SD and after the museum was highlighted in the Travel+Leisure magazine, we decided to visit. It is located in the absolutely wonderful and unique Balboa Park, which is about the only really positive thing we can say about this visit. Surprisingly small, with only 3 fairly large rooms, we spent about half an hour there. The entry...

We went because my husband in into photography. It is a small but cool museum. Everything in it was interesting. Entrance fee is only $8 but you only need about an hour to see it all. The gift shop has some wonderful items especially books. I think we spent as much time in there as in the actual museum.

With more than 2 million photographs and curatorial collections that include objects such as shoes, furniture and jewelry, the Museum of San Diego History tells the story of San Diego since the 1840s. The museum’s Thornton Theater seats 100 and offers lectures, programs and workshops.

Museum of Photographic Arts was one of the first in the United States devoted exclusively to photographic art. Each year there are a number of shows displaying daguerreotypes, master works, pictorials, prints and photojournalism. The museum also offers a printviewing room, a library and a theater.

Maintained by San Diego's Historical Society, this museum uses permanent and changing exhibits to retrace the great city's development from the inception of California's statehood in 1850 to the present. Special exhibits have included local architecture, and the history of San Diego as a film location. Permanent collections include fine and folk art from the region, textiles and clothing,...

Museum of Photographic Arts - If names like Ansel Adams and Edward Weston stimulate your fingers to do the shutterbug, then don't miss a taste of the 7,000-plus collection of images housed by this museum -- one of few in the United States devoted exclusively to the photographic arts.

The Extras

Check out the retro photo booths, both black-and-white and color, that still work.

Know Before You Go

Several of the museum's gallery spaces and courtyards are available for private and group rental. Museums within Balboa Park are very popular for weddings and special events, so be sure to reserve at least one year in advance.
