One of the South's largest hat stores has been in operation for more than a hundred years and is run by a fourth generation of the Meyer family. A favorite of locals and out-of-towners, the shop carries a large selection of fedoras, tweed caps, Kangols, cowboy hats, and just about any type of topper you can put on your head.

My husband loves his Stetsons, and Mr. Meyer showed him a new one that he had to have. This is an authentic hatter, and an experience that no one with a passion for hats should miss.

If you're visiting New Orleans any time between April and October, you'd be wise to wear a reliable, comfortable hat. I packed one, but my husband didn't -- and he soon regretted it. While in New Orleans we walked by Meyer The Hatter 5 times a day on our way to & from the French Quarter. I was fascinated by the window display but also by the fact they close at 5:45 each day. Five-forty-five! Not 5:30 or 6:00. That was reason enough to go in. I went in for a $20 fishing...
