Meritage

A relative newcomer to the downtown St. Paul restaurant scene, Meritage breathes fresh life on the historic Rice Park area with its European charm and weekend brunch.  Arriving late on a Sunday morning and undecided on eating breakfast or lunch, we opted for a variety of offerings. To start, two amusements—petite appetizer bites for $3 each—of a smoked salmon blini and a granola yogurt parfait....

Meritage Restaurant Review

Chef Russell Klein, alum of W.A. Frost, is now his own boss and all-the-better for it as he’s freed up his creative juices in the shuttered Au Rebours kitchen. The cozy bistro’s décor (and fab view) remain unchanged, as does the homespun Gallic thrust of the menu, which puts classics like coq au vin and bouillabaisse on offer. But Klein sneaks in plenty of inventions that defy origin, such as...

Say bonjour to this latest French immigrant in downtown St. Paul; modeled after a traditional French brasserie, it fits nicely into the historic Hamm Building.

In Short
Whether you like French food or are just willing to give it a try, Meritage is a great place to embrace the cooking of France. With a menu that changes monthly to use fresh...

I went with 5 friends for a birthday brunch on a Saturday afternoon. I got the quiche du jour, my friends got the savory seafood crepe, eggs Benedict, blueberry pancakes, almond croissant, and other foods. Everything looked, smelled and tasted wonderful!!! I'd say the prices are very reasonable. The place …

We've been dining here several time a year, generally before the opera or a show at the Ordway. It was enlarged several years ago and seafood choices such as oysters added. I would classify the menu as Brasserie/ Bistro type French. I used to delight...

I can list for days on end all of the delicious things I had at Meritage, wild shrimp, pancakes, house burger, spiced duck, and I really could go on. The service is hit and miss, but no big deal, the food over compensates.

Save Money

Check out Mertitage on Sunday nights, when the award-winning French brasserie serves a three-course prix fixe menu for only $20. Chef Russell Klein serves up local and organic fare as well as French-inspired seasonal offerings, like French onion soup, steak tartare and roasted rack of Iowa lamb in winter. And don't forget to try the pommes frites with bernaise sauce as an additional $7 appetizer.

When to Go

For those working downtown, Meritage offers a refreshing change to your lunch landscape. Close that big deal or just meet co-workers there to talk about the boss.

The Extras

On Saturdays and Sundays from 10am till 2pm, Meritage serves a to-die-for brunch that includes omelets, vanilla-scented French toast, eggs bendict and the restaurant's signature steak frites served with two eggs.

What to Order

Meritage is revered for its seasonal menu with unique American-French fusion fare, but the truly epicurean-devoted go for French classics like bouillabaisse, steak frites and foie gras.
