Help us make it rightIn late April 2011 Sichuan Hot Pot comes to Arlington with the opening of Mala Tang in Virginia Square. Owner and Sichuan Master Chef Liu Chaosheng, known for his fiery culinary style featuring the famous Sichuan pepper, will oversee the kitchen and menu. The new venue, located near the Arlington Campus of George Mason University (3434 Washington Boulevard; Virginia Square Metro), is a...
The inspiration behind Mala Tang is Sichuan Master Chef Liu Chaosheng's hometown of Chengdu. Here you'll find the streets filled with diners sitting at tables gathering around bubbling hot pots, in which dozens of dried chilies bob up and down in an oily red broth. The hot pot itself is a pan that sits on a portable burner, surrounded by an array of small plates piled high with fresh...
The dining experience at Mala Tang begins with authentic Sichuan appetizers known as xiao chi (little eats). Chengdu favorites such as Dan Dan Noodles, Mapo Tofu and Zhong Dumplings will be served to guests in a street market-inspired dining room modeled after Chengdu's renowned Jinli Street. These xiao chi dishes are traditionally made to order by street vendors at marketplaces throughout the...
Named for the hot and "numbing" sensation that distinguishes Sichuan food, this "fun" Arlington eatery is outfitted with special tables for individual hot pots that allows everyone to cook "in their own style and level of spiciness"; there are also other dishes that would be found in the Chengdu street stalls depicted in the back wall mural, all of them offering a "good value for the money."
For those who crave heat, and only the gastronomic kind, Arlington is home to a gem of a Chinese restaurant that has gathered together all the imaginably searing Sichuanese dishes and put them onto its sure-to-please menu. After all, the menu is subtitled “Sichuan hot pot,” and that’s no joke. The lunch and dinner offerings differ slightly, but at both times you can select a hot-pot to share or...

1) Peking Duck: One of China's national treasures, Peking duck is a special dining experience where even the meticulous tableside presentation is a treat. Everyone has a favorite part, whether it's the lacquered, crackling-like skin, or slices of dark meat with lush, fatty ribbons, wrapped in pancakes with scallions and hoisin sauce. Find it: Duck Chang's, 4427 John Marr Drive, Annandale,...
Good food and wonderful ambiance. Place was not so crowded and tables are spaced out well.
Mala Tang has great food, a very comfortable dining room and patient, but attentive, service. I loved the cumin lamb dish I ordered. It had heat but not scalp sweating heat. I will definitely pay more visits to this yummy Asian gem.
Went there for my son's birthday. Lots of fun, though I would not bring small children because the highlight is cooking food in boiling pots of broth!
We always go out for Asian cuisine on New Year's Eve and this year we landed on Mala Tang. We hadn't even heard of "hot pot", but we were excited to give it a try. They were accommodating to our party of seven and helped explain the hot pot experience. It was delicious! Will definitely be back!
Dumplings are amazing.

If you wander around Chef Liu's hometown of Chengdu, you'll find the streets filled with diners sitting at tables gathering around bubbling hot pots, in which dozens of dried chilies bob up and down in an oily red broth. Meals notoriously last hours as locals chat, sip beer, and dip morsels of food into a simmering liquid of "hot and spicy" broth. One of the most popular dishes in Sichuan, this...
Inspired by Chinese street food carrying the same name, Mala Tang simply serves this hot and spicy broth special, a popular dish from Sichuan. Comprising of vegetables, meat and a garlic-sesame oil concoction which is brewed to form a searing soup, this dish is a crowd pleaser. Diners can choose their add-ons such as dan dan noodles, pork dumplings, tofu, wontons. Accompany it with sake,...
