Serving red-sauce Italian specialties in the East Village since 1908. Traditional old school classics and vegan versions available. Old school goes back to school!
"Upholding the art of Italian cooking" since 1908, this East Village "institution" endures thanks to "no-nonsense" red-sauce meals (plus recently added vegan selections), all at "fair prices"; "no credit cards" and "nothing-fancy" decor – think "Chianti bottles" and "melted candle wax" – add to the "time-warp" vibe.
Few restaurants--of any magnitude--can manage a century-long history, but John's of 12th has been serving old world-style Italian food since 1908 and has long since become a staple of the East Village.
Amazing service and the food was literally to die for !!! Proper Authentic Italian !!! X absolutely fantastic!!! ??
Wonderful quaint Italian atmosphere with authentic home made Italian food. Hard to find this kind of quality and taste anymore!!! Love Johns of 12th Street!!!
Really great authentic place!!!
First impression is that it is loud and crowded, but somehow it isn't rushed. It is busy and people are animated and happy. It is a great place for celebration. It is good for groups or a table for 2. The food is very good. I recommend the Eggplant Rollatini. We will definitely visit next time we are in NYC....
A business contact who lives in Manhattan recommended John's, so my family walked here from W. 54th---well worth the walk! This is the quintessential Italian restaurant in NYC! GREAT lively atmosphere and terrific food. We got the egg plant Parma, chicken Parma and Tuscan Ragu---very tasty, but could use a bit more seasoning.

The original Belgian mosaic tile floor was handlaid in 1908 when this old world establishment opened, and the tarnished murals of Italian scenes have seen better days, but the overstuffed portions of Italian favorites served here draw in an oftentimes young, hip crowd--especially bands and others from the music industry. Start with the grilled bruschetta with garlic, goat cheese and sundried...
Entrees are reasonably priced and just as when the restaurant opened, they accept cash only payments. No credit cards.
Celebrities often frequent John's and the restaurant was featured in the final season of HBO's critically acclaimed series, The Sopranos.
