This unprepossessing spot is a smallish oasis of serenity in the Irving Street restaurant corridor specializing in the wonderful noodles of Japan such as soba, udon, gyoza and ramen. The staff is friendly and glad to share their love of noodles with you. Hotei is a good place for vegetarians, and a good place to save money. Reach there on time as street parking can be difficult to find.
Oodles of noodles (oh, so sorry for that). Traditional Inner Sunset noodle house across from sister restaurant Ebisu serving soba, ramen, gyoza, and other Japanese specialties. 13 types of udon, the curry version being top pick. I used to live in this neighborhood and loved Hotei, particularly their tsukimi udon. THe ika fry is also very good. One of the main draws of this place is that you can get sushi from Ebisu across the street (has the same owners) without fighting the huge crowds that flock there all the time.

Went there for work with my colleague who spent significant time in Japan. He loved Hotei's authentic vibe. We had the dish with chicken and eggs mixed in with rice and we both enjoyed it. Our waitress, from Japan, was a ton of fun, and you could tell that she really enjoyed her work and this helps elevate the score...
We wanted a quick place for a light dinner, and found this. Pretty good sushi and veg Gyoza. Good service. Not sure if I would recommend going out of your way for this.
Nice fresh ramen noodles and savory broth. Tempura was nice and light. Good option to fuel up before or after the science museum.
Great stop on the way to the Golden Gate Park. Had a roll and some yakisoba. Food tasted good and price was fairly reasonable for portion size. Didn't feel super authentic Japanese, but it was tasty.
