Hope Cemetery

The "Granite Capital of the World," Barre lies just 7 miles east of Montpelier. On a hilltop north of town you'll find one of the world's most gorgeous cemeteries. Many of the superbly crafted tombstones were carved by the stonecutters themselves to demonstrate their skill. A few embrace the avant-garde, while others take defined shapes lake a racecar, biplane, and soccer ball.

Beautiful craftsmanship, great memorial to the craftsmen

Great attraction to see the craftsmanship in some of the memorials and also to discover some of the history of the region as well as the local granite industry. I would highly recommend that a visit be preceded by a stop at the Rock of Ages visitor center.

In the days before there was protection from the granite fumes, the cutters didn't live a long life. They knew this and carved their headstones while they were healthy.
