Help us make it rightAt the end of the road to Hanna, the park is a rewarding treat. Take a hike up the mountain, see the great fall. Taking a dip in one of the pools below the waterfall was a great experience for me. To me, it was not only a wonderful journey, but the fantastic ending to the road to Hanna.
The recommendation is to catch the sunrise at the top and the preferred method to get there is to do the bike tour. But even for those of us who can't get up early, it's still a site to see this fog shrouded, red dirt, barren top that looks exactly like something you'd see on another planet -- precisely what it doubled for in Star Trek filmings! Try to visit with the Silversword in bloom.
Breathtaking view of the sunrise although it's a hike to get there early. Memorable site with little cost.
A "must go" at least once to witness a most beautiful sunrise, but bundle up and leave the shorts and t-shirts in the room, it gets cold and windy at the top; but well worth the effor to get up so early to make the trek to Haleakala.
A long drive. Get up early on your first morning before you are used to the time change and watch the spectacular sunrise over the atmosphere. It will be very cold and windy before dawn (take the bedspread from the hotel if you didn't bring a jacket).
Mile Marker
You haven't seen a Maui sunrise until you've seen it from the summit of Haleakala Mountain (a volcano, considered sacred by ancient Hawaiians and dormant since 1790) in historic Haleakala National Park. Step inside the visitors' center to find out all about how the crater was formed and ask the knowledgeable staff any questions you may have. The closest resorts on the west coast are 2-3 hours...
This national park covers 30,183 acres, of which 24,719 acres are designated wilderness preserves, and is dedicated to preserving the outstanding volcanic landscape of the upper slopes of Haleakala. The on site Haleakala Crater, known as Maui's "House of the Sun," is the world's largest dormant volcano and is large enough to fit the island of Manhattan.
