What the community has to say about Guelaguetza Restaurante

Information about this business (2)

Los Angeles is a haven for Mexican food lovers, with choices that range from upscale to taco truck. Some are good, lots are bad and many are similar. But you’re unlikely to taste anything you order from Guelaguetza Restaurant elsewhere in town. Soledad Lopez is the local guru on cooking from the Oaxacan region, its most famous export being moles: deep, thick, complex sauces that sometimes call...

The Guelaguetza (from the zapotec word "guendalizaa") between the villages in Oaxaca means "mutual help" or "Shared Offering".

As a natural consequence, this word today also represents the maximum celebration of art and culture in Oaxaca. The Guelaguetza is celebrated annually in the month of July. Communities from within the state of Oaxaca gather in the city to present their regional culture...

Oaxacan Oasis

Guelaguetza is a Oaxacan, rather than Mexican restaurant. The cuisine is all about the mole, clauydas and other regional dishes, not the typical tex-mex fare in your normal Mexican restaurant. It is sometimes very crowded, particularly on a Sunday afternoon after Church and during the soccer game, when the place gets totally packed. It's defintely a great place for lunch. My favorite is the huge Oaxacan black mole chicken tamales, which are wrapped in banana leaves . Wash it down with a Mexican (i.e. real, sweetened with cane sugar, not corn syrup) Coke or a Mexican chocolate con leche. Guelaguetza sells dry mole rojo and negro pastes; just add chicken broth or water to them and you can bring this wonderful taste home with you! One of the best reasons to live in LA is to eat at places like Guelaguetza. (I can't say it's one of a kind, because they have another branch closer to downtown LA.)

THIS RESTAURANT HAS CHANGED LOCATIONS Guelaguetza Restaurant Review

Fans of Guelaguetza (and there are many) aren't put off by the grungy Koreatown location, the sweetly raucous music blaring from the jukebox or the soccer game on TV that's usually competing with the jukebox. This friendly and clean little establishment prepares the most authentic---and probably the best---Oaxacan cuisine in the city. The complex, intensely flavorful mole dishes, multi-layered...

Peek into a Oaxacan kitchen and taste its awe-inspiring moles.
