Sandy Witch Launches Happy Hour; Check Out the Menu

Pi Pizza Truck owner Anthony Calleo's Sandy Witch Sandwich Company inside of Grand Prize has been a big hit since it opened last summer. Locals flock to the bar well before dark to grab a bite for dinner, so Calleo has decided to launch a happy hour menu that's set to debut today (May 7). All of the items on the menu are $5 every day of the week from 5 to 8 p.m.

Tailgate Throwdown 2; Lei Low Pop-Up Wednesday

LISTICLES— Celebrate the birth of a new royal heir at one of these nine British pubs. It includes most of the usual suspects including River Oaks's Red Lion Pub and the Richmond Arms. [29-95]

MONTROSE— Get your tiki on this Wednesday as upcoming bar Lei Low has another pop-up at Grand Prize Bar. It honors author Ernest Hemingway, which means lots of rum drinks. [Facebook]

The Heights Is Getting a Tiki Bar: Welcome Lei Low

Grand Prize partners Matt Loreman, Ryan Rouse and Brad Moore have teamed up with Down House employees Elizabeth and Russell Thoede to launch Lei Low, Houston's only tiki bar. Despite the worn down looking location in an anonymous strip center, Moore tells Houstonia that Lei Low will be "a really good neighborhood bar" when it opens later this fall. The Thoedes are hard-core tiki fans who've...

Here's The Menu for Sandy Witch Sandwich Company, Coming to Grand Prize Next Week

This morning Pi Pizza Truck owner Anthony Calleo tweeted the menu from his new concept Sandy Witch Sandwich Company. Expected to open July 5, Sandy Witch will be located inside favorite service industry drinking spot Grand Prize and will utilize the kitchen that had previously been home to a revolving series of pop-up dinners. In an interview with Eater two weeks ago, Calleo defined the concept...

Pi Pizza Truck to Bring Sandy Witch Sandwich Company to Grand Prize Kitchen

At an invite-only tasting last night, Pi Pizza Truck owner Anthony Calleo previewed his new venture, the Sandy Witch Sandwich Company. Rather than another food truck, Calleo has leased the kitchen at laid back Montrose cocktail spot Grand Prize and will utilize it to sell his sandwiches. The bad news is that the days of chef pop-ups and one-off dinners at Grand Prize are coming to an end within...

Business description (2)

When you need a friend, Grand Prize is there.

A local favorite in Houston, this charming bar's laid-back atmosphere makes it an inviting place to spend the evening. In fact, Grand Prize has just about everything one could want in a dive bar, plus a few extras, like cheap but perfectly crafted cocktails and mouthwatering appetizers from Feast, a well-loved local restaurant. Patrons challenge each other to pool tournaments, chat over beers...

Tips about this business (7) view all

This is THE restaurant industry after-work hangout. This means it's a place you'll find chefs, bartenders, servers and other industry folk after hours. Cocktails are excellent. I love The Repair. The new food truck rotation in the kitchen (food truck owners will go inside the kitchen and make food for you) means you can get grub AND drinks.

One of the best cocktail programs in town, without all the hype. The patio is vast, the crowd is mixed - though often industry heavy - and the rotating guest chefs courtesy of the city's best loved food trucks make GP hard to resist.

Great for groups - you can hang out downstairs with the crowd or grab a seat upstairs in the lounge or patio. Keep an eye out for when they host food truck chefs, too.

The gritty vibe of this bar combined with outstanding cocktails & a decent variety of beer makes this one of my go-to bars in the city.

Tucked between residences and a quiet park, Grand Prize is a Museum District hideaway for people who usually hit Montrose. Now under the ownership of Brad Moore (also of Big Star Bar in the Heights), the interior of this former sports bar hasn’t changed too much in its latest incarnation. It still has a bar and a patio for each of the two floors, a pool table and an old-fashioned jukebox but now everything is cast in the hazy glow of red light bulbs. Even though the bar is stocked with cheap beer (a favorite among the skinny jeans, fancy sneaker set that hangs here), the bartenders know...
