Gramercy Tavern Restaurant Review

At the entrance, a display filled with fruit, vegetables and flowers sets the tone: cuisine based on sincerity. Rustic décor provides a welcome break from the asphalt jungle's techno tune-filled minimalist eateries. Chef Michael Anthony, formerly of Daniel, and successor to Tom Colicchio, has entered the Manhattan chef aristocracy. In the first, informal room, simpler dishes are served from...

You can rely on "top-class" dining with "no gimmicks" at Danny Meyer's enduring Flatiron New American, where chef Michael Anthony's "outstanding" set menus are presented by "eminently suave" staffers in an "upscale-country" dining room arrayed with "gorgeous" flower displays; it's "not cheap by any means", though the front tavern offers a "reasonable" a la carte menu in a "colorful" walk-in...

Danny Meyer's pride and joy is classy but not crabby, and soaring on its second wind courtesy of laidback chef Michael Anthony. Delicate versions of lamb shoulder and smoked lobster, in fun preps like poached or braised. American rustic digs are nothing so special, but perfect service keeps this place in the rarefied air of top Gotham dining experiences. Tavern Room is casual and cheaper, but...

Before Tom Colicchio hosted Top Chef, he was cooking bold and creative New American food at Gramercy Tavern, the place that took the starch out of New York fine dining and became one of the city's best-loved restaurants. Colicchio exited in 2006, but executive chef Michael Anthony, previously with Blue Hill at Stone Barns, has taken the helm of this dual-personality establishment (raucous and...

Tips about this business (6) view all

What to Drink: Gramercy Tavern is one of the very few restaurants in New York to have a vintage beer program. They're concentrated, flat and very, very good.

Where to Sit: Try to eat in the front "tavern" room, which is more lively and relaxed and a truer reflection of the restaurant's spirit than the slightly stuffy main dining room.

The Extras: Leave room for chef Nancy Olsen's desserts, which come from the dead center of the American tradition (chocolate cake, strawberries, cookies), but raised to an almost unprecedented level.
