Gertrude's Restaurant Review

With tan, dusky brown and bronze appointments that evoke the spirit of late afternoon along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, Gertrude's interior is a thing of beauty, befitting its home in the Baltimore Museum of Art. Outdoor tables overlooking the Wurtzburger Sculpture Garden are among the most prized seats of summer. Owner-cookbook author-TV chef John Shields' farm-to-table menu focuses on...

Pause at Gertrude's during a visit to the Baltimore Museum of Art. Chef and cookbook author John Shields has created a restaurant filled with local delights -- making this place a destination in itself. The sleek space has tall windows overlooking the sculpture garden, with outdoor seating in warm weather. The menu includes soups (such as rich cream of crab) and sandwiches (with plenty of Old...

This would be my 8th time or so coming to Gertrude's but my first Valentine's Dinner. Reservation was made easily by opentable and confirmed day of by a call from the restaurant. The 3 course menu was great, the lobster bisque and lamb shanks being my favorites of the night. The wine pairings were quite interesting, paired well, and tasted good. Service was quick and accurate. My date even got...

The Valentine Day 3 course pris fixe menu was creative and enticing. We dined early so it was less noisy than usual because at 5 the restaurant was not full. Bouquets of red roses and candles on every table and a red rose to take home. Good waitress, hot food, rare lamb chops, rich lobster bisque, crunchy avocado toast spread with tomatoe jam, super fresh rockfish heaped with crab imperial,...

Crab Cakes: Gertrude's located in the Baltimore Museum of Art in Mt. Vernon mixes good food with good art. Owned by chef John Shield, the restaurant celebrates Chesapeake Bay cooking and follows the farm-to-table movement by incorporating fresh, local and sometimes organic ingredients into its dishes. The number 1 seller are its crab cakes, offered three different ways. The deserts and fall...

Tips about this business (3)

On Tuesday, Gertrude's becomes Gertie's cafe. Diners may choose from 10 entrees (that come with two sides) for a much lower price. Even the wine is cheaper.

When the weather is fine, ladies take a trip out of doors and dine at tables scattered throughout the BMA's sculpture garden. Conversely, if there's a nip in the air, seating adjacent to the patio can get chilly.
