Help us make it rightThe best loaves of bread around the Pacific Northwest. My favorite is the walnut wheat with chunks of walnuts, mellow wheat flavor, holds up well for toasting. I drive down from Seattle and specifically make sure to pick up several loaves, along with the fabulous pastries. You can always pick up a loaf at Fred Meyer's, in the organic section....
We've tried a lot of pastries in Portland, looking for something similar to Europe. Most of the places seem to have too much baking soda or salt in their bagels, or they've have gone overboard with the sugar! Strangely enough, most of the places we've tried are mediocre at best. But finally at last found a place that is like a Pastry Heaven ! It seems that Gabriel's Bakery has figured out the formula for excellence, attention to detail. great presentation and the right ingredients in the right amounts creating beautiful perfect tasting pastries. My only wish is that they had a ...
The coffee shop there next door to Gabrielle's bakery in NW has closed its door. Bummer. I am always sorry to see places like that go - but the reason I mention it here is because there seems to be a shortage of places to find Gabriele's baekd goodies around town. Sometimes they will sell them to me right out of the bakery but it sure would be good to know of a place over here in the Sellwood area.
Anyone know of someplace I don't know of?
Pros
+ the best bakery
Cons
- hard to find around town
This is hands down the best bakery in Portland. Their jalapeno bagels are the tastiest ones I have ever had. I couldn't stop eating them. Their apple boats are divine. I can't get enough of their pasteries. I really wish they had their own storefront, but the coffee shop next to them sells their stuff, 1111 NW 16th. Yum!
I've tried almost all the bakeries downtown, looking for good pastries. Lots of them are awful. I've had tasteless cream, acid baguettes or croissants that are not fresh.
Gabriel's does not only top all of them, but their croissants are really excellent! And I'm very, very picky. They also have excellent Danish and donuts (BTW I didn't know a donut could be good). And when they say it's fresh, IT'S FRESH! (unlike some others).
Pros
+ Inexpensive
