The owner of this compact sushi bar claims his was the first in L.A. to feature a conveyor belt transporting the sushi around the room and is the only such spot in Little Tokyo. The practice, called zaiten-zushi in Japan, emphasizes speed and value, and Frying Fish is therefore one of the area's more popular sushi bars. The crowd skews young and the sushi is fine, but this is no Matsuhisa....
We think the sign maker was actually told to write flying fish by a very Lost in Translation employee. Local one-off Red Robster claims to be L.A.'s first sushi bar to "do it" on a conveyor belt—which everyone should experience if but once. Decent fish, better prices. This little sushi place was our favorite 3-4 years ago. We went last week to have the incredible dynamite they used to serve but was very disappointing . I think the cook has changed. The sushi was not the same. I hope they consider a change there.
You know that whole Zoolander quotation about moisture being the essence of beauty? Well, I'm not quite sure anything here is moist or beautiful. The little conveyor belt is cool to watch for sure, but how many grimy paws nip at those rotating dishes? I'm not even a germaphobe, but I still find the enterprise …
