Fontano's Subs

"It's all in the bread" (and "finest deli meats") at this Chicago chain cranking out "awesome" subs "the way they should be" ("no wimpy" items); "you know it's good because all the cops eat here", but many get it to go since "it's a slice of life, not a fine-dining atmosphere."

I used to order Fontano's takeout a few times a month. Raved about them. Was willing to pay the higher-than-average charge for the pasta because the quality and portions were good. Then the portions got smaller as the prices continued to rise. Took a break...
Looking for a throw-back, decided to try them again. Mistake. Minimal portions and watery vodka...

Not to be confused with the Fontano's Subs chain, this clearly has a different menu and goal.
It feels like a place in transition - they're known for subs with a simple service counter, but in reality the kitchen is better than that, and deserves to be a full-service dinner destination. At 5pm they start offering table service, before that...
