A worthwhile brief stop for architecture and history buffs, this 1885 building was originally a showroom for Studebaker carriages. In 1917 it became an arts center, with offices, shops, two theaters, and studios for musicians, artists, and writers. What an exceptional and visionary idea to regroup artists under one roof and have the idea run for a century. Seems to be a nice place to work in

Recently restored Studebaker Theater

Average Rating

During Open House Chicago we visited the Studebaker Theater within the Fine Arts Building. They have done a nice job with the restoration of the old Studebaker Theater. It is a smaller, more intimate space, which would make a nice venue to see a performance.

Designed by Solon B. Beman, this building opened in 1885 as a showroom and factory for the Studebaker company. Back then, it made a variety of horse drawn vehicles.
