Editorial reviews from the web (3)

Ethiopian food is staged for "cosmopolitans" at this "upscale" West African in the burgeoning Atlas District, where basketweave tables and homeland art provide a "lovely" backdrop for "very flavorful" cuisine, served "graciously"; while it lacks the "raw feel of similar joints on Ninth Street", this slightly "pricier" version is "very popular", ergo reservations are "a must."

The spongy rolls of sourdough injera bread (a ubiquitous carbohydrate on Ethiopian plates) used in place of utensils can make traditional Ethiopian feel decidedly undelicate, but the bright surroundings and friendly service here make for a downright romantic experience. Venture off the well-beaten path of spicy lamb and lentils to try the spicy chickpea dumplings or fragrant simmered split...

I've tried quite a few Ethiopian places in D.C., as it is my favorite cuisine in D.C. I don't live there anymore but every time I go back, I have to go to Ethiopic.
My friends took me to this restaurant years ago and now...

I have been here a couple of times and the food has been super each time. There is something for everyone here and the staff is really good about recommending dishes and drinks. 3 of us shared one of the sampler platters last time with...

My mother, myself, and my 9 year old daughter tried this place. My daughter absolutely loved her meal. She rated it as best of vacation. As for myself, I rated it middle of road. I really liked the beef that I ordered. I just don’t...

first time here. Good food. service okay - it was slow and she was not friendly. I did my husbands first time eating Ethiopian food and I found the server not very helpful. I did not find this restaurant to be amazing.

Amazing food, experience and atmosphere but not kid freiendly

Unless your kids love spicy food this place does not have an option for them… but it is a fantastic experience for adults. The food is to die for and the flavors well balanced. The fact that you eat with your hands gives the food...

Tips about this business (4)

Intimate, urban, and unique, Ethiopic is a perfect fit for the gritty, diverse Atlas District. A well-kept secret among regulars, the restaurant never overflows with patrons, but there’s enough people to make it lively. With its leather-bound menus, minimalistic African decor, and sunlight streaming through the windows, Ethiopic is more upscale than most of the Ethiopian cuisine found on U Street. As always, honey wine is a featured drink, and patrons can’t go wrong with picking one of the many sampler dinner platters offered. Choose between vegetarian, vegetarian with fish, or the beef and...

Parking

Although parking on H Street is usually limited, there should be ample street spots right outside the restaurant on Fourth Street.

Where to Sit

For people-watching purposes, ask to sit toward the front of the restaurant by some of the large windows.

Look Good

As with most restaurants on H Street, Ethiopic is totally casual. The grungy look will fit in well here; think jeans and a T-shirt.
