Empanada Mama takes pride in offering our customers delicious meals. Editorial reviews from the web (2)

Stuffing its "huge following" with "amazing" empanadas and arepas, this 24/7 Hell's Kitchen "hole-in-the-wall" (with a new LES offshoot) is the mother of all "cheap" South American "pocket"-food purveyors; undersized, "overcrowded" and at times "disorganized", it "lends itself to takeout."

A hot little pocket of Latin American goodness on 9th Avenue.

The Scene
It's hard to miss this space, both for its splashes of bright colors--lime green, red, yellow and more green--and for the line of office workers and neighborhood regulars...

We ordered online for pick up. When we came in, we waited for our order. There was a good crowd waiting to be seated. Small waiting area and the front two tables are bad seats with the traffic of...

Always a great choice for delivery. I have never been to the actual location but can't get enough of their empanadas. The jerk and cheese is my favorite. A traditional corn flour empanada with...

I came back here late night and they sat us quickly regardless of the place being packed! The bar was lively and the place was packed on a Saturday at 3:30am. The cool thing is this place is open...

Business description (5)

Empanada Mama is located at 763 9th Ave @W 51st St, New York, NY. This location is in the Chelsea neighborhood. This business specializes in Restaurants.

Latin Restaurant. The greatest NY empanadas and so much more.

Socrates Nanas, who founded this restaurant with the owner of the Mama's Empanadas chain in Queens, has a foolproof plan to feed the masses: big flavors in small packages. The menu of more than forty empanadas stuffed and sealed with wheat- or corn-based shells is designed to hit a nostalgic nerve. Whatever flavors you like, you can expect them here, wrapped in a warm, yielding pocket: Greek...

Empanada Mama's red and green storefront bursts out from the dingy grays of 9th Avenue, beckoning visitors in for its huge assortment of handmade empanadas. Founder Socrates Nanas has created forty different varieties of this international favorite, stuffing shredded pork, beef or vegetables into wheat or corn husks before a light fry renders them golden and delicious. Clever variations on this...

Empanadas are one of those types of food that have always had an identity crisis. With the establishment of the Empanada Mama, things just got worse. The Cuban, Italian and American empanadas cover your basic meat groups (ham, pork, sausages). Then come the fruit and veggies with the Hawaiian, Greek and Polish empanadas (spinach, kielbasa, sauerkraut, pineapple). The masquerade ball isn't over...

Tips about this business (2)

What to Drink

The shakes, made with fruits like guava, strawberry passion fruit, act as a nice counterpoint to all the fried food on the menu.

The Extras

Though the corn flour empanadas are cheaper, the doughier wheat are worth the extra 50 cents. Fried, naturally, is the way to go.
