Brendan Sodikoff replaces his short-lived deli, Dillman’s, with this River North Italian, offering a menu of raw starters, salads, antipasti and fresh pasta complemented by Boot-centric wines and classic cocktails including several variations of the Negroni. The low-lit, old-world setting features dark wood, exposed brick and leather-upholstered seating with an espresso bar and a seasonal patio.

Sodikoff Unveiling Cocello Tonight; Read the Full Menus

Tonight, Chicago dining enthusiasts can taste Brendan Sodikoff's take on "boutique" Italian cuisine—at a deep discount. Sodikoff spread the word last night that he's unveiling Cocello, the reconcepted Dillman's, during a soft opening tonight through Thursday. All customers who come in during that period will receive 40 percent off their food purchases.

Sodikoff has thrown a curveball by nixing...

Brendan Sodikoff Reconcepting Half of Dillman's into 'Boutique Italian'

"We have more kitchen and seats then we know what to do with," Brendan Sodikoff writes. "Perfect to squeeze boutique Italian in."

Thus begins the downsizing of Dillman's, Sodikoff's Jewish deli concept, and the birth of his latest venture. The superstar restaurateur will launch the latest trendy Italian concept by a noteworthy chef or restaurateur in Chicago, joining the likes of Nico Osteria,...

Deli classics like sandwiches, salads and knishes join more upscale fare like short-rib borscht on the midpriced menu at Brendan Sodikoff’s traditionally inspired River North knoshery in the former Steve's Deli space; many of the ingredients are housemade (including the bagels and cream cheese), and the multipurpose space – which has been transformed with wood, leather and chandeliers –...

2013: The Year In Openings

As 2013 winds down we look back at the restaurants that made the most impact upon opening over the past 12 months. Certainly some of these were anticipated from the moment they were announced (Eataly), while others seemed to sneak up on everyone (Smalls).

January
Gene Kato moved from Japonais to open Sumi Robata Bar, the stunningly designed tri-level robatayaki concept in River North. Mike...

Fabulous

Everything was fabulous! From appetizers through dessert, every dish was a flavorful cacophony of pleasure in our mouths. Our server Michelle knew the menu liked the back of her hand and made wonderful suggestions as we asked for them. We started with the almonds and ribiola cheese with fig jam. Bread is warmed and sliced as you order it. The short rib and linguine with clam sauce dishes were...

Great atmosphere and impeccable service. Limited menu, inflexible, and food just okay. A few healthier options would be nice.

Have been here several times but the menu has changed and several favorites have been eliminated. Service was adequate but when I asked if I could change the sauce on one of the pasta dishes they said absolutely not! How difficult can that be? They seem to have an attitude that they are something they're not - I don't think they know yet what they want to be when they grow up!

Coming from the stables of Hogsalt Hospitality, Cocello is the brainchild of Brendan Sodikoff. This modern Northern Italian diner replaced Dillman's and has garnered a dedicated fan following for its pastas, fish, meat, crudo and antipasti.
