This red-brick lighthouse towers above the northern Outer Banks landscape in the historic Corolla Village. Visitors can climb the winding staircase, 214 steps in all, to the top of the lighthouse for a panoramic view of Currituck Sound, the Atlantic Ocean and the Currituck Outer Banks.
The 1875 lighthouse was built from nearly one million bricks, which remained unpainted. Except in high winds or thunderstorms, you can climb 220 steps to the top of the northernmost lighthouse on the Outer Banks.
The BackgroundBuilt in 1873, this working beacon stretches 158 feet tall. The unpainted red-brick structure creates a picturesque backdrop against the white Victorian lighthouse keeper's quarters. If traveling south on the Outer Banks, this is the first of the famous lighthouses... Don't miss it's personality which sets the tone for the others to follow. Be sure to hike out on the boardwalk into the marsh area. Well worth climbing for the view.
Walking around the area seeing the small town with the different houses that were used back in the day around the lighthouse.
We were told by the bookshop that it was open but when we stopped in it was closed. There were a couple other visitors that were also surprised to see it closed. Wish we could have actually gone in it. It's also hard to get a very good picture of it without being able to go on the grounds.
This is a lovely area in Currituck county. The grounds are very interesting to walk around. There's a museum that you can walk through for free and you can see the lighthouse and the Whalehead Club. We didn't go in the whale head or the lighthouse, too pricey. If our whole family had done both, it would've cost $140.00, ummm,...
My husband and I climbed the lighthouse after it had finished raining.. The climb was easy but it was very windy up top.. I was too scared to go to the railing to look around, I hugged the side, took a photo and walked back down.
