And just to add to it: the reason there are pending transactions is because the merchant has not processed the actual debit. When the debit comes in, it is matched to the pending item, which is then dropped and the debit paid.
In many cases, though, the items do not match. Examples are when you add a tip to a restaurant bill, or when you buy gas and the station holds only a dollar, or...

It's nice to see things haven't changed much regarding overdraft charges. i will take my report a step further:
I got a checking account but only for the card and never ordered checks, and i only ever used the card for doing debit transactions.
my bank has the ability to see pending charges and since POS (point of sales) systems are meant to be instantaneous, if I go online i can see them...

Not a Bank Employee or work for a bank, but these are fairly simple explanations:
1. The bank has a separate system that tracks transactions and will interface with the online system you see. Since they happen to be two separate systems, there may be situations where the bank will see a transaction when you don't.
