Since 1996,Cocoro East has been one of Chicago's rare Japanese restaurant where fusion takes a back seat to authentic fare. The owner, chefs and even servers are Japanese,so,when in Chicago, the Japanese know where to go for "down home"comfort(and even fancy) food done the exactly correct way. The very experienced, professional staff, however is also quite creative and accommodating. Specialties...
Noodle soups and shabu-shabu (Japanese fondue) are two reasons to visit this festive spot, which also serves a line-up of sushi and maki in combo and à la carte configurations. Bento boxes are an excellent value, and there's plenty of saké to go around as well. A pleasant atmosphere adds to the overall appeal, as does the lush green tea ice cream for dessert.

LOVED that this was traditional Japanese...

Two items I think that are worth trying here:1. Agedashi tofu - it's one of the better ones around the city.2. Nabeyaki Udon - Delicious, true to its Japanese roots. The broth is sweet and salty at the same time and the udon noodles have a great bouncy consistency. That being said, I would skip the ramen …
We walked in and were quickly seated. We began to look at the menu and tables and realized that shabu shabu and sukiyaki were both available. We've had trouble finding Japanese shabu shabu, and while we both like Chinese hot pots we miss the real deal. Nonetheless, we weren't here for shabu shabu …
Good service.
If you desire an authentic Japanese dining experience at bistro prices, complete with sushi, sake and traditional dishes like Shabu-shabu, Cocoro is the place to visit. The interiors make you think of a typical Japanese building with beautiful Shoji (lattice) windows. It recreates the ambiance of an Izakaya (East Asian bar) and makes use of potted plants and dim red and golden lighting to...
