Kobe beef very poor quality beef

I ordered the $50.00 Kobe Beef entree and I received a cold ,overcooked, thin steak with the quality equivalent to a breakfast steak at a greasy spoon. The beef was chewy and did not come close to resembling the Kobe beef I have eaten many times in Japan and in the US. I was truly disappointed that they even advertise their superior Kobe beef on their website and on the back of their menu. Please do not be fooled and order the Kobe beef as it is a completely different beef from what you receive. The only positive was the friendly staff that tried to make up for the lack of food quality....

Carefully made Japanese specialties arrive in small, mounting courses at this popular Albany Park spot. – In ShortFormerly Matsumoto, the space has received a serious overhaul, leaving swaths of red paint, globular pendant lighting and Japanese floral wall art. The food here deviates from the familiar few forms of Americanized Japanese food. Ippin Ryori is a style of small, savory bites ordered by the lot for sharing, often including bound seafood salads, fried fish, sauced beef and basic sushi items. There are dozens of choices. The other dining option is kaiseki, a seven-course (or more)...

Simple interior lines and a pared-down menu characterize Chiyo's recent renovation of the former Matsumoto. With a new name come new offerings, like shabu-shabu, a cook-your-own adventure where your choice of meat is prepared at table in steaming broth. Try Yose-Nabe – a combination of shrimp, scallops, fishcakes, vegetables, and beancurd in seafood broth – for a Japanese take on bouillabaisse....

Tips about this business (5)

Know Before You Go

Chiyo is owned by the same group behind Chicago Kalbi, the Korean barbeque place nearby on Lawrence. Expect the same quality and dedicated following.

The Extras

Shabu Shabu is also popular--the hot pot dish in which diners cook thinly sliced meat and vegetables in simmering broth.

What to Drink

Chiyo has an extensive collection of sake, shochu and plum wine. Wine drinkers might be thrown by the menu, which groups all three according to flavor profile with little regard for bottle size or price.

Where to Sit

The private dining room is very well done. It's quiet, truly private, warm and inviting. Book it well in advance for the kaiseki option, a serious meal for a deserving space.

Parking

Lawrence is a busy thoroughfare, but has surprisingly plentiful parking--as long as you can fold in your mirrors.
