Cheval Bistro has introduced to the Old Pasadena dining scene the unique beauty of traditional French bistro fare. The dark wood paneling sets the tone for the warmly-lit, remarkably comfortable interior. The sprawling antique bar dispenses vintage cocktails, single malt scotches, and a wide selection of French and California wines by the bottle and glass. Experience the taste of France that is...

It's like "Paris in Pasadena" at this Old Town French from the Smith Brothers, earning a "thumbs-up" for its "enjoyable" menu elevated by specialty cocktails and an "epic" wine list in a "quiet" space whose centerpiece is a 100-year-old mahogany bar; midrange pricing is a plus, and although a few find fault with "inconsistent" food and service, most leave "satisfied."

Veteran Pasadena restaurateurs Bob and Gregg Smith (Parkway Grill, Arroyo Chophouse) also have this lively French bistro in their repertoire, located in historic Old Pasadena. A massive antique bar anchors the front of the restaurant, which transitions into a spacious dining room in which French beverage posters line dark-wood walls. Bistro classics dominate the menu, and a wine list offers...

We had a lovely dinner here on a Wednesday evening in May. The restaurant was quiet, the service attentive and professional (kudos to Lorena), and the food outstanding. Our steaks were of prime quality and cooked to perfection. The starters ( onion soup and endive salad) were delicious and memorable.
We would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. It is a...

Cheval Bistro feels much like a bistro in France. They serve a variety of authentic french dishes. Among the dishes we tried: l'escargots, gougeres, coq au vin, and the crepes du jour. The Crepes were quite good although buried in a sauce that was about twice as much as any one person needed. The l'escargots arrive in their shells and...

I went here with a group of friends for Sunday Brunch and it was very nice. We tried several items on the menu, the big hit was the French toast. Only thing that bothered me was the smell of cleaning solution. Not sure if they had just cleaned that morning but I expected to smell the food not the cleaner....

Aiming for typical French bistro in design and offerings, Cheval Bistro does nothing to distinguish itself from the competition. While some offerings (eg the crepes) were quite good, others were indifferent at best. We were a late seating, but service was subpar on several levels. Other, better, choices in LA area and elsewhere for bistro style cuisine

I was a little leery about going to a French restaurant as I am not a fan of sauces. I had the Filet Mignon which was cooked perfectly medium rare. The staff was very accommodating substituting green beans for potatoes. The atmosphere was lovely as was our waitress.
