Chase bank. penalty charge - more than $300 for the lost cashier's check!

I have opened an account in Chase bank. When I closed my account, the teller issued me a cashier's check. Unfortunately, this check got lost. I came to the Chase bank and said that this check got lost. The bank didn't make a "Stop payment" on the check! They only did it a few weeks later.
